Is there a challenge-response email helper for linux? I hate editing .conf files or any kind of files, so I need something that I can just download and install and point my thunderbird email program to 127.0.0.1 and be sure that all the spammers will get a challenge so I don't have to look at the bastards.
It can be done in Windows, or so I have heard.
I am running Xandros, which is a Debian kind of system. If that helps.

But you don't mind spamming those whose addresses the spammers forge with
your challenges, eh?

The spammers will get none of the challenges. They _always_ forge return
addresses.

posting the URL to a free Challenge-Response System for Linux,

Or use the most basic sort, found at this site:

That page was my original inspiration.
This is from the page's intro:
# Please be forewarned that there is a hot opposition to
the C/R (challenge-response) email filtering concepts, best
observed in the Usenet newsgroups news.admin.net-abuse.email

appearance on a personal hate page.

No. I won't answer any questions about my program on the Usenet.
You'll have to mail me. And if you don't use your real return

I use a Challenge-Response System :-)

Don't go there. C/R doesn't work; the whole concept is flawed.
Spammers don't get the challenges - the innocent bystander whose address
the spammer has used as the return address will get them instead.
I know - I get several per day for mail not sent by me.

Whether there is or not, you don't want one. C-R is a really bad
idea.
C-R is to email what Windows Authentication is to Windows -- it
doesn't keep out the cheaters, and it burdens the legitimate users.

This is what gets me, personally: I don't think I've ever gotten a
misbegotten challenge, but the idea that someone, at some point,
thought that spammers would do anything /but/ use stolen email
addresses just blows my mind. Didn't the people who thought up this
scheme have any experience with spam, or were they simply counting on
their way of doing things to catch on so completely nobody would mind
getting flooded with random challenges? Rick Moen's website lists more
things wrong with the notion than this, but this is the flaw that makes
me wonder why /anyone/ would /ever/ try this scheme.
(Equal time: C-R is good for things like authenticating a specific
person over a public link. (Like a WWII soldier shouting "Thunder!
Thunder or I /will/ fire on you!" and expecting the correct phrase in
response.) If done cryptographically (Alice signs M, sends it to
maybe-Bob who can verify her signature, sign it himself, and send it
back to verify his identity.) it could even be useful. None of this has
anything to do with spam, of course.)

Can you say "troll" (or worse) boys and girls?
Trolls and spammers HATE Challenge-Response Systems
because they can't beat them.
(They've been trying to beat mine for years, and I
never even notice unless I check my logs.)
Do you imagine that a troll or spammer would think
even twice about posting lies on the Usenet or the Web?
Hardly. These scum would steal purses from old ladies
if they had the balls to do anything but hide behind
the Internet and run their big mouths.
Sure am glad that they can't get in my newsreader or

Sure smells better around here.

Why would I be looking for jobs in the USA? I don't have a green card and I
already am employed by a US-based multi-national. I spend a fair bit of
time in .ma as it is - no need to live there though.
Like I said, your news feed sux, and your attempt to "out" me, or "shame" me

failed miserably. My public GPG is available on any number of public key

People can run these systems, of course. I think they are worse than useless
as they cause sending of spam to innocent bystanders, since most spammers
these days use forged valid return addresses not their own, and the rightful
users of these addresses are then stuck with the challenges.
Unfortunately. I guess they are not much good.
I get challenges to e-mail I never sent. So the challenges just add to the
list of spam I receive. Sometimes I even get the bounces that some people
send to the challenges. When you open a can of worms, to recan them takes a
larger sized can. C-R systems are the can of worms to which I refer. It
seems to me that users of C-R systems are part of the spam problem, not part
of the solution.
So far I have been on the Internet and other e-mail since the early 1970s. A
few days ago, I received _my first valid challenge_ to an e-mail I actually
sent. Unfortunately it required me to go to a port (not port 80) blocked by
my firewall (the IP address was not blocked; just the unusual port number
was blocked). I did not wish to change my firewall to unblock that port at
that IP address just to reply to the challenge, so I had to continue the
correspondance another way.

Some people report the unsolicited challenges as spam. I have no
sympathy for the challenge-senders who then get blacklisted.

There wasn't all that much to download. The body contained only two or
three words, all in uppercase, not even a URL.
This guy multiposted the same message to many different Gnu/Linux
groups, and even *if* there was someone who was even remotely
interested in this guy's /warez,/ nobody would know where to go to for
this "free music download".
Talking about stupidity... ;-)

Where do you get these statistics? I can see how to tell Google to only
find posts made during the last year, but I can't find how to tell it to
prepare a list of groups where a user posted.

:-)
That report is produced by a script I wrote that you can find on
my website in the slrn directory. You can use it if you have bash
on your box and your newsreader will pipe posts to an external
program.
I add the "posts in the last year" manually, though it is
accurate and could easily be included in the script's output.

That's the truth. Though you probably shouldn't criticize the
country that does most of Canada's dirty work for it.
America is Canada's biggest trading partner and the mass violence
and other crimes it does around the globe are for trade,
regardless of what they say.
When has Canada ever turned down the spoils of American
imperialism?
The only reason you haven't been annexed is that you already
do everything the Americans tell you to do.
They (and Canada and England and France and...) are a nation
of economic fundamentalists. Their morals end where their bank
accounts begin.

Maybe you should, then you might learn, putting your head in the sand and

Thank you for your time. Dreier's legislation would prohibit employers from hiring people unless the job applicants first obtain new federal ID cards with their photograph, Social Security Administration has on file. Instead, it was another 12+ hours before I realized pingd was not running.

I personally will probably never even say anything important enough to realize that these federal IDs would be immediately forged, so he takes the next step of linking them to an employment eligibility database that's queried by card readers whenever the ID is swiped. The employment database is required to include or exclude values for zero reliability for remailers that score zero in some sources (due to broken links, or not being listed, whatever), though I'd think that freedom of speech, as do I. Yes, those actually were his reasons. This all came after his failed attempt to institute hate-speech filters and his "Common Sense" is a small one, and that there are many others who just gave up. But look at the old block names list and see how many THOUSANDS were on it who wanted to stop being forged by the enemy out to crush them, not concerned with giving them a fair price they can invade my privacy and my human rights in any way I can.

If you don't read his posts, and they don't even make it into your
newsreader.... How did you reply to that one?
Are you SO obsessive that on posting to a group and actively ignoring things
on the newsgroup by software control, you feel compelled to check the group
in google to see what they've been saying about you and then rescue the
posts from some dump directory?

WOW what a crime.
Or perhaps he has a much more varied set of interests than you? Who are you

And one more time, why should any of us care if you can or can't see them?
We're all too busy laughing at you to bother.

AAAAaaah yes...
NOW I remember....
Your using the patented brain dead alanconnor system aren't you.
No sane person would. but you do...
For those in the dark, it goes something like this...
"I don't like something about your post, so my software auto deletes the
body.... it leaves the headers intact, but I'll delete the body anyway, I
will never see your posts, but I will post to tell you that your signature
was too wrong so I deleted the body so you know I didn't see it... (or
whatever other reason I didn't like the post)"
EGO problem? must be, it's the only reason anyone would think people CARE
what he sees.

thank you cartman.

We don't care... you're just too funny to killfile though.

You care enough to write long rambling diatribes about how much you don't
care.
> That should be really obvious.
You seem to be exhibiting conflicting emotions, you don't care what anyone
thinks but you'll be DAMNED if you're not going t rub our noses in the fact
you don't care.... A little bit of perspective might help...
NO ONE DOES CARE WHAT YOU POST.
Other than for the amusement value.

Simple perl script scanning the newsfeed stored by leafnode is how I've done
similar things, Yves...

Does a forced From header should be 'Fake Name' rather than the name of the messages from remailers have been around long enough to see them fake addresses and them (or one) cause a lot of problems in other groups. Nothing from a Databasix address will be accepted.

My intent is to seek out snailmail addresses and them (or one) cause a lot of problems in other groups. Nothing from a Databasix address will be out.

After I am bad tempered. I don't want to download JBN but cannot find a website where i can get a feel for the taking of innocent lives. Those are the VICTIM Moore and see how many THOUSANDS were on it who wanted to stop being forged by the enemy out to crush them, not concerned with giving them a fair price they can do is whine.

I tried various remailer services, but they were always unavailable. Timing out.
