damn small linux not (dsl_n)

  • Follow

hi!

i downloaded the latest(?) dsl_n and burned a cd. it worked fine on my
laptop
except it didn't find my wlan: 2200BG.
(is it possible to add support for this wlan later???)

well, i was actually interested in putting dsl_n on an USB-stick and so i
did.
the installation seemed to go well but then, trying to boot... it wouldn't
boot... :-(

i know this stick can boot, as i have tried to boot win-98 from it.

is there anything i missed? the dsl_n system seems to be there ok but no
joy.

cheers,
christine

Yes, but you need to use 2.6 kernels.

You have to program it with the correct USB hub/host modules.

Yes, the correct drivers.

hi!

many thanks for the reply!
as i don't know so much about these technical matters, i thought
dsl_n would do everything needed for the installation to the USB-stick

i installed the dsl_n to my USB-stick from my laptop running dsl_n and there
is an "install the dsl_n to an USB-stick" program :-)

oh, well, need to invetigate this a little bit more. maybe some other distro
has
made this better than dsl_n ?

cheers,
christine

....and DSL is heavily dependent on 2.4 kernels.

If you want a similarly small distro, take a look at Puppy Linux
(www.puppyos.com) and try one of the alpha releases of version 2, which
uses the latest 2.6 kernels, and has the centrino drivers included.

hi!

thanks for the advice.

i downloaded and burned a cd with puppy and it worked fine except (of
course)
wlan (2200BG) and unfortunately it didn't find my laptops mouse-pad :-(
it did found an external usb-mouse (of course?)

all bigger distros as kanotix, knoppix and suse10 which i have tried has
always found all my hardware in this laptop (acer travelmate 8006LMi)

this puppy version is based on v. 2.4 :-(

it's really VERY fast and has a lot of nice programs.
one thing is for sure: i won't use the mail/newsreader ! that's the worst i
ever seen in any os and/or computer...

i had to look for the ethernet driver from a (huge) list, it wouldn't find
it by itself. even
if it told me what hardware i have!

the wlan-thing is annoying...is it so, that the intel pro wireless 2200BG
driver is built in in a newer kernel (2.6...) and it cannot be put in in a
older???

now for the newsreader...i'd love to use the same as in kde, but can it be
fit in into puppy?
how universally interchangeable are linux programs for different kernels?
this puppy has a 2.4.29 something...

puppy is the way to go IF some minor additions and changes can be made.
(wireless and news/mail reader !)

it easily installed on my USB-stick and boots very fast from it. nice!

cheers,
christine

Pleased that it helped :-)

Please post about the mousepad on the Puppy forum in the hardware section,
so someone can get it working.

It's hard to beat the germanic thoroughness of the hardware detection in
Knoppix and its derivatives :-)

Sylpheed? Some love it, some hate it. I just use webmail.

Are you sure that it hadn't loaded the driver, but not yet activated the
card? That's its normal (quirky) behaviour. It's only the first boot you
have to do it.

It's my understanding that the constraint is because Intel has not
provided a 2.4 driver.

The Puppy 2 alphas are pretty stable, try the latest one and see if the
wireless works. I don't have a centrino to test for you :-(

If you have the disk space. Remastering the CD is as easy as falling off
a log, too.

Most user apps don't care TOO much about kernel version, more about
libraries.

Did you try ndiswrapper in Puppy for the wireless? There's a wizard in
the setup menu.

Glad you had fun with Puppy. The forums are chock full of assistance and
generally quite active if you want detailed help.

There is a package manager in Puppy, look for "package manager" and
"dotpup" in the menus. You can install anything with a couple of clicks
if there is a package. I've seen someone request an obscure package on
the forum and then seen someone else come back within a couple hours
saying that they had uploaded the new-built package to the server.

Cheers,
Mark

hi!

many thanks again for the reply and advices!
yes, i'll experiment with the puppy (and maybe with other distros too)
and learn maybe how to make my own small distro tuned for my own
needs :-)

what i'd like to start with is the latest kernel...

my need for applications is not very exceptional:

something to write with
excel type program
picture handling
netbrowser
mail/news

just normal things

now i need to search for a nice newsreader, so i don't have to write this
in windows... :-(

cheers,
christine
