Debian x64 on Sempron CPU

  • Follow

I'm currently running XP pro 64 on a Sempron CPU.
I'd like to reload the system with Debian Linux.
I think that the x64 version will probably work
but will it give me a performance advantage over
the "standard" x32 version?

Yes on computation and graphics, not much on other stuff.

Yes, but the performance difference may not be overwhelming with all applications you run. On the other hand,
I vaguely remember a success story involving some linux media player project, x86-64 and a bit of hand-
written SSE assembly code but unfortunately I can't find anything on that. Anyone?

Nevertheless, here is a list of goodies that you get by running a x86-64 system:

Hope this helps,

I think the only things that are 32 bit on my 64 bit system currently
are ntpd and flash. And possibly RealPlayer, though I think I junked
that anyway and ran with Helix..maybe the driver for the wifi is 32
bit.,.niot really suer.

Any open source stuff can be recompiled.

And by and large, it is.

There aren't THAT many 32 bit nonfree apps around, and of those most do
not burrow deep into the OS and will run with 32 bit compatibility
libraries which is not ideal, but they still run as fast on the 64 as
the 32.

Its the odd one that breaks that screws you.
