Failure of X in RH9 -Twice- Really frustrating

  • Follow

Hi all,
I have RH9 installed in 10GB partition. It worked normally for about 3
months.
Then suddenly one fine morning X does not come up.
I tried editing XF86 Config file, but it did not seem to contain any error.

The error message I am pasting below :

OS Kernel: Linux version 2.4.20-8 (bhcompile@porky.devel.redhat.com) (gcc
version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)) #1 Thu Mar 13 17:54:28 EST

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to xfree86@xfree86.org.

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I tried to copy XConfig file from Slack9 installation on another partition
on the same PC but no avail. It seems that in RH9 takes the Xconfiguration
from a python script somewhere. The usual X Configuration command did
not configure it and X Failed to come up. Finally I deleted RH 9 and I
reinstalled
it. Now after two months the same problem has cropped up and I am at my
wits'
end. What is to be done ? Did anybody else experience this problem.?

My system specs are Celeron 900MHz, 128 MB RAM, i815e M/B, 40 GB HDD
Samsung 56V monitor (15").

Pl help.

Srikanth

PS : Meanwhile, Slack9 does not seem to have any problem. It is running
smoothly as also win98 which rules out any hardware problem (I think ...)
like
flaky RAM or fried graphics card or graphics card driver corruption.

I guess, some files are missing.

okok, check wether all requiered packages are installes, all partitions you
have used to install are mounted.
Btw. It's possible to start XServers with a specified configuration file.
Try it with your Slack one.

On RH9 boxes, the "configurator" programs are often named 'redhat-*',
e.g., 'redhat-config-xfree86'.

Hmmm... Very odd.

1) Have you installed all of the RH9 software updates?

2) Like many others, my Linux box locks up from time-to-time when I'm in
X and a graphics-intensive screensaver kicks in. (I've experience this
problem with various hardware platforms and with different Linux
versions/distros. My guess is some of these screensavers are poorly
written, or (less likey) there's a subtle bug somewhere in the XFree86
code.) The point here is this: when the system locks up, I cannot do
anything but power cycle the box. Power cycling a computer that's "up
and running" is a BAD THING - this can (and often does!) corrupt the
computer's file system(s).

3) Which versions of XFree86 are you running on your RH9 and Slack9
boxes? Are the versions the same or different?

So it didn't find those modules, in my installation
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a resp.
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a

The places searched for those modules can be specified by the ModulePath
command in XF86Config, FILES section (or maybe from the command line or
probably from a compiled-in default). Either the module files are missing,
or the module search path is screwed up (and something must have gone wrong
to let this happen).

Look at the Red Hat Linux 9 Red Hat Linux Reference Guide at
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/

Section 7.3.1.5 says, "The MODULE section specifies which modules from
the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules directory the XFree86 server is to load."
Obviously, then, the modules "bitmap" and "pcidata" are being removed
from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules for some reason.

Check to see what is in the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules directory. If things
are missing, copy your /etc/X11/XF86Config file to root's home directory
for safekeeping and reinstall XFree86. After locating which CD the
XFree86 RPM resides, cd to the RPM directory and execute:

	rpm -Uvh --force XFree86-4.3.0-2

Yes, this did the trick.
Thanks

Now that the problem is solved I really feel crappy that RH is behaving his
way. Prior to this I was using RH7.3 which was really smooth. ( I am using
RH from ver 6.0 onwards).
Any known cases like this repeated X Failures in our newsgroup members?

While I'm not very particular about RH, I believe that somewhere in this
thread you had mentioned problems with the filesystem. I had asked
which one you were using. Your problem lies with the filesystem or
less likely media, not the distro.

Judging by the amount of errors it sounds like you're using ext2, try
using ext3 or reiserfs. You might also check for bad blocks. I think
it's a little unusual for your first sign of trouble being that you lost
X in 2 cases, but I guess you can't beat it for bringing the problem to
your attention.
