Good Day,
Am somewhat new to Linux & am learning it to be more familiar with the
environment...
My distro is Arch...Am trying to set up an X Window system...
I chose Arch as its optimized better for older i686 systems...
So I chose XFree86 4.7.0....for my X Window System...
I d'loaded it...followed a very easy to read documentation in
XFree86 website....Did everything exactly as prescribed in that
documentation...
sh Xinstall.sh -check ( So the output of this utility helped me to
select the correct set of binaries ( glibc24 ) )....
Also d'loaded the 13 mandatory files as told here...
http://www.xfree86.org/4.7.0/Install2.html#2
Si i have all these 13 files in a single directory...I did a CD to
that directory...
Ran ' sh Xinstall.sh ' as told in the doc
( http://www.xfree86.org/4.7.0/Install3.html#3 )....
So the archiving ( extracting or installing ..I dont know ) was jus
running smooth.......without any issues........
Finally I goth message somethin like ' Installation Complete '...( I
forgot the exact sentence that it displayed.)...
So i thought the next step is to keep the XFree86 server running....
( as given in doc )..........
did a,
'XFree86 -autoconfig'
The screen seems like flickerin or flashin for a second or two...
It shows up like it got installed
Like its showin,
getconfig.pl: Evaluated 29 rules with 0 errors...( Similar lines of
compilation run through...successfully.)
......but at the end....there is a line like...
' Fatal Server error :
could not open default font 'fixed'
I also tried like this....
I did a Cd into that directory....then .
'XFree86 -configure'
Now ....I see like a list of hw like apm,i128,nsc,ati,1810 etc like a
column.....
Then ' (++) Using Config File:"/root/XF86config.new" '
XFree86 is not able to detect your mouse.
Edit the File and correct the device.
Your XF86config file is /root/XF86config.new
To test the server ,run 'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86config.new'
So thats all i got it....But i was able to proceed upto this level...I
dont know what to do further...??? Is this a problem that can be
rectified...???
Also I could check further for any info required on this issue if any
instructions or steps are provided...
Also this is the laptop that am usin ( Toshiba Satellite
4000CDS.....Jus providin this link for the HW specifications abt this
model...)

Is someone still using XF86 as their default windows system?
Most distributions abandoned XF when it forked after a licencing argument 3
years ago. The fork is called Xorg and I imagine by now, it's where most of
the development has been, along with most of the innovation.
As for the rest...
Does your "Arch" not have a package management system?
I'm not familiar with that one but it looks like you went through all that
install manually when most distributions would've done it for you
automatically.

Try Damn Small Linux. It's optimized for older systems and includes a
GUI.

Ya,It does hav a package mgmt system but i need to stay connected with
their FTP...& when i use Package mgmt commands...It tries to
automatically connect to server...dload...& then install everything
automatically...But the thing is I dont hav internet connection for
that machine....I am jus dloading them from another machine that's
connected with internet...burning it to a cd-rom & doin all this stuff
from the linux machine...

As for this I dont know much about licensing agreements & all... I was
jus googling around & i stumbled upon this XFree86 releaese....Jus
studied some documentation in that site....& found it to be good..So
thought of proceeding further.....
current release is XFree86 version 4.7.0 and was released on 12 August
2007 ( As given in their website )....So i think its not that bad...

Ya...Kinda...I agree to this point completely...But I do hav WinXP/
Solaris in dual mode in my desktop....havin all those nice easier
GUI's....So am using my old laptop for learning purpose....That's why
installed Arch ...which is powerful,optimized,fast....on this
machine...& trying to setup everything according to my requirements...

Ya...I know that...but ...As i told am using my old laptop for
learning purpose....That's why installed Arch on this machine...&
trying to setup everything according to my requirements...So i feel
like am learning the Linux environment better in this way...Thats why
am still sticking with this...

I'd still suggest dumping XFree and going with Xorg.
As I said, all the major linux distros have gone in that direction, Xorg has
gone in a different direction to Xfree since the fork and things might not
work the same way when you use Xfree.
I think compiz-fusion for example, requires Xorg.
