No Internet Connection

  • Follow

Hello!

Since yesterday, I cannot connect to the internet. I use kppp, which dials
correctly and everything wents fine, but then: nothing.
The connection is established, but no browser and no email-client does
anything.
This is confusing me, because until yesterday everything worked fine and I
don't know what I could have done wrong.

This is my system:
Mandrake 10
SLModem driver (works fine with my selfmade-Linux)

Thanks for any help!

Daniel

How do you know there is "nothing"? Have you run tcpdump on ppp0 and
seen "nothing"?

The latter is nothing to do with "connecting to the internet". Stop
speaking gobbledegook! In all likelihood you mean "my ISP has changed
DNS servers without telling me, and I have forgotten to use my
telepathic hat to find out what they are and enter them in kppp's
dns configuration window"

Anything. Given that you haven't told us what you did, what tests you
have run, or even if you have looked to check your claim. Ping the
other side of the ppp connection, while watching it with tcpdump.

It's obvious from Daniel's questions/tone that he doesn't know what
tcpdump *is*. Peter: Remember that not everyone is as experienced as
you are! Daniel: I'll try to recast Peter's comments in more
newbie-friendly language.

To find out what's really going on, use kppp to connect. Then execute
the following commands and post the output:

ifconfig (shows you the IP addresses of all network interfaces.
Interface ppp0 should have an IP address.)
cat /etc/resolv.conf (shows you your DNS configuration)
ping -c1 141.211.125.17 (tries to send 1 packet to the U of Michigan's
main DNS server; if this works, your problem is a DNS problem. If it
fails, the problem lies elsewhere, probably with some of kppp's
settings.)

In kppp's Configure->Accounts->IP, you probably want "Dynamic IP
address" checked, and "auto configure hostname from this IP" unchecked.
In Accounts->Gateway , you want to have "assign default route to this
gateway" checked. Accounts->DNS should be set to "automatic". Finally,
you should have the "show log window" checkbox checked in kppp's main
window; try to connect then and a log window with various information
will appear when kppp connects. If you see anything weird/unusual in
that log window, post the exact text you see in a followup to this
message.

Peter's advice about ping is certainly good, though I question the need
for tcpdump here. I'd check DNS first; if you can ping 141.211.125.17
but you can't ping umich.edu , you have a DNS problem. HTH,

Thank you, Dances_With_Crows, you're right. I just installed it and I know
now.
The connection works fine again. I was able to track the problem down to a
misconfiguration of its driver. I guess the Mandrake Control Center changed
the permissions of some symbolic links in /dev. That's the only explanation
I have, although I know it's not really satisfiying.

Thank you very much, especially for the "newbie-friendly language". ;-)

Friendly greetings,
Daniel

No, I don't. I use dynamic IP adress.
