Problems installing Oracle 9i (9.2.0.4.0) Client on Linux Fedora Core 3

Hi,

When I run the "runInstaller" script, the message below is shown:

[oracle@llamas Disk1]$ ./runInstaller
[oracle@llamas Disk1]$ Initializing Java Virtual Machine from
/tmp/OraInstall2005-02-24_03-10-39PM/jre/bin/java. Please wait...
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Unable to load native library:
/tmp/OraInstall2005-02-24_03-10-39PM/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol
__libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link
time reference

Any hint ?

Thanks in advance,
Jose Luis.

IIRC Oracle is compiled agains an old version of the LibC, so if you
want to use it you need to install a "compatible" library.
I think that you can find a lot of info just googling with such
error message.

The Java Runtime Environment that obviously comes with the installer
does not work with the C library that you have installed.

I searched the web for you, and arrived at
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/A96167_01/pre.htm#sthref106
which tells me that you need
SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 7 with kernel 2.4.7, and glibc 2.2.2

While you can probably ignore the SuSE requirement, the glibc prerequisite
makes sense.

What glibc do you have installed?

Sorry, I goofed up.
The correct link for your version seems to be
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/B13670_03/toc.htm#BABJEGDH

Which gives recommendations for
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3

I only chose the "sqlplus" component.

Now the message below is shown:

Error in invoking target install of makefile
/home/oracle/OraHome1/sqlplus/lib/ins_sqlplus.mk

Any hint ?

Jose Luis.

If there are those various compat-*.rpm (compat-glibc*.rpm/etc)
packages available for Fedora, as they come with rh, it shouldn't
be a problem, once you have installed those.

I got the exact same error when installing htmldb. I ignored the error
and htmldb installed fine.

Pretty annoying, Oracle insisting on ES/AS versions of Redhat/SuSE.

You can use a rh enterprise clone, like CentOS, this should ease
things. Dunno if there's some suse enterprise clone or if the
license allows one at all?

Or pay the money for a original enterprise version, shouldn't be
that much in addition to the tons of cash you pay Oracle for the
server license. Sorry, if misread, but there should be no reason
to install sqlplus unless you want to talk with an oracle server?

.... IBM's tools do the same thing (DB2/Websphere), but all
it says is, "you are installing to an unsupported OS, this
install might not work" (or something like that). however,
i've installed those tools to other distros (suse 9.x, etc).
CentOS is a good alternative to RHEL

I have found the solution on Internet site: "http://forums.oracle.com"
:

 Modify the files: $ORACLE_HOME/lib/sysliblist and
$ORACLE_HOME/lib/ldflags, add the parameter "-static-libgcc" to the
end, re-compile the files, such as:
make -f ins_sqlplus.mk install
make -f ins_rdbms.mk install

Best Regards,
Jose Luis.
