Setting a user's password as root?
Ok, pretty simple question, but I'm a pretty simple guy. As root, I
want to set a user's password. What is the best way to do this? I am
running Mandrake 8.2 i586. Thanks -

As root you do it with: passwd username
As the user if the user has permission to change his/her
password: passwd # then enter password

See passwd(1) in the manual.
simply put:
% passwd username
if you are root, it will not prompt you
for the old password. If you are not
root, it will only you to change you own
password, not matter what you type
for "username". If you are root, you
can change anyone's.

Take responsibility for keeping usenet free of clutter: use PGP sigs
only when neccesary.

How do *you* propose to judge whether Alan needs to use a PGP sig or
not? He is the best placed person to know whether someone has attempted
to impersonate him.
