When I set up no-passwd for root so I could do rsync backups with ssh
on the LAN, in root's home dir I did something like this:

ssh-keygen -t rsa

This should create the files:

..ssh/id_rsa
..ssh/id_rsa.pub

Then I copied id_rsa.pub as .ssh/authorized_keys2 to my home dir on the
remote host.

There's a little bit more.

Your (remote user's) home directory can't be readable by anyone but the
user, or the login will still require your password. It can be
executable but not readable. I personally would make your .ssh
directory be mode 700 too.

I would advise against allowing root to ssh in, I think it's safer to
set up sudo and then make it so root must use the local terminal.

You're saying "access" and "execute" both. Presumably these are
scripts and you want to run them from remote?

Thanks to Ken and Nietzsche for their thoughtful replies.

Just to add, should you are on windows OS, automating "putty" can be
little daunting. You can get a fantasic cookbook sort of guide here at
http://www.unixwiz.net/techtips/putty-openssh.html . It provides a full
passwordless, agent-based access that requires no step in contrast to
regular passworded access to system. "psftp" will help you for access
files on remote system when agent in on the run. You can even automate
the "passphrase" input including the sessions here.

Linux workstation to Linux Server file access???
Gentlemen; Previously I've run Samba on my linux servers to allow access from my Windoze desktops. This worked with limitations but was usable. Now I've replaced many of my desktops with Linux workstations and I have tried mounting the same samba shares successfully but I'm experiencing quite some difficulties with ownerships and permissions (especially permissions). My research and other groups are telling me that I should rely on *nix native network sharing (nsf?) to accomplish this. So, to attest to my ignorance on this issue, please explain if nsf is the preferred way to go AND how it should normally be mounted? I have servers and a nas device and I have been playing with variations of the mount -t nsf blah blah without any success. Please provide some mount examples or preferably how I could make an entry into my fstab file to automount these shares? Thanks millions. Win2000 Server can access client but client cannot access server files.
Hi We're running 2000 Server feeding 4 PC's and two Macs. Last week I found one PC can no longer access files on the server whereas the server can access any files on that PC. access control for networked file server
Dear all, I am writing a user-level networked file system with a user-level networked file server. My server simply receives requests from its clients over TCP and performs the necessary requested operations on the files stored locally at the server. Accessing dynamically multiple VNC servers using SSH
Hello, I have the following networksituation: A->VNCViewer->SSH Cl.- -> VNC Server 1 | B->VNCViewer->SSH Cl-->Internet->SSH --|> VNC Server 2 Server | C->VNCViewer->SSH Cl.- -> VNC Server 3 Now I would like to connect from A with my VNC Viewer over SSH to one of the three VNC Server. This can be done by portforwarding. -L 5901:server1:5900 -L 5902:server2:5900 -L 5903:server3:5900 To access from A to Server 1 I have to connect to localhost:1 on client A. Till now fine. But wat I'm looking for is to manage the following scenario: Client A connects over the SSH Client to the SSH Server. The SSH server looks which port he already has forwarded. Because A is the first Client who wants to access a VNC Server, SHH forwars it for example to VNC Server 1. Now client C wants to connect to a VNC Server. C connects over the SSH client to the SSH Server. The SSH Server notice, that already someone is forwarded to VNC Server 1 thus the SSH Server forwards the client C to the VNC Server 2. And so on.... One important thing, each client (A,B,C) has a dynamic IP. Does someone have an idea how to solve this? Maybe I need some kind of proxy? Use a redhat enterprise machine as Remote Access server for Win2K network?
Hi all, We need to replace our ageing Windows-based remote access server. This machine currently has an Eicon DivaServer 4/8 port ISDN/PSTN RAS card and uses the Windows Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) to route the network traffic in from the Eicon card thru it's network interface onto the rest of the LAN here. It uses RADIUS to communicate the authentication details between the connecting client and the Active Directory servers. I'd like to use a RedHat machine to provide this functionality rather than a Windows box and wondered if: 1) is this possible (sure it must be) 2) what software I need on the machine in order to achieve this? The RADIUS on the RH Enterprise machine would be a client of the RADIUS service provided by the primary Active Directory authentication server, I guess routing would be handled by complex sets of 'route' commands unless there's some Linux equivalent of Windows RRAS? If anyone has such a scenario or can envisage how it would go together I'd really appereciate hearing about it! TIA, Niall ...

Can't access winxp (unicode) files from linux FTP server...
I'm looking to replace a NT4 server box with a gentoo installation - pretty much all services (apache/php/mysql/samba) are working well, with the exception of proftpd. Files placed on the server over smb from windows clients sometimes contain accents and other non-ASCII characters, which I didn't have problems with when using WarFTPD with NT4. ProFTPD, however, isn't liking the unicode filenames. I've read through the gentoo guides without much luck (setting locales to UTF-8, etc). On the user level, I can still only view unicode filenames correctly after logging into the console as root and running unicode_start, despite having a UTF-8 locale. I have a feeling that I need to do this globally for all running processes in order to make proftpd work with unicode, but no idea how. At this point, using a windows ftp client to access proftpd will result in a correct display of filenames - proftpd seems to be sending the client the filename exactly as it is on disc, so the windows client correctly displays the accents, etc. Attempting to access the file is another matter - the windows client sends a request to access the filename and proftpd doesn't recognize it at all. Is there any way for proftpd to work with these files, or any linux FTP daemon? The sad alternative is to upgrade the hardware and use windows 2003 server, but surely this is something that Linux is capable of....
