Hi
I'm a 13 year old girl. I need to buy a computer for school work.
I'm just wondering which one is best?
Linux, windows or a mac?
Thanks

Buy the same type of computer that your school is using.
You're welcome.

Dammit. I'm trying to start a flame war here, between Linux nerds,
Windows loosers and those really cool people who use macs, and that
response isn't helping. You suck.
I am the greatest troll ever!
Fear my wrath!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first advice is to never listen to anything Edwin says. He manages
the impressive record of being wrong 99.73% of the time.
I would ask what you want to do with your computer. Please be as
specific as possible.
In general, if you're looking for something for homework, email,
internet access, and similar things, the Mac will be a more reliable,
troublefree solution.
If you have applications that only run on Windows or if you want to run
the top of the line, state of the art games, get a Windows PC.
If you're getting a computer as a hobby and want to learn how computers
work through endless futzing, get a PC running Linux.
If you want to post more specifics, I'm sure someone here will be able
to help. If you avoid Edwin's response, the answers might even be useful.

You'll have to do much better than that original post, or even this one
then. Both are pretty far down on the ol' trollometer!

I'm trusting enough to give someone an honest answer to what COULD BE an
honest question.
The question should be - how sad are you to always assume the worst of
people?

Sorry, but I prefer to think the best of someone until I have evidence
otherwise. There ARE occasionally people who come here asking honest
questions, so there's no reason to attack someone right off the bat.
Of course, once someone proves themselves to be a troll, all bets are
off.

It is. But that doesn't mean that EVERY post here is a troll - or that
one should assume the worst of someone.

You start off with a libelous attack...

The OP was only a troll, but the question posed is which type of
computer is best for a 13 year old girl's school work. The obvious
answer is the same type of computer as the school uses, so she wouldn't
have to learn two different computer systems.

Buy either Dell or Apple. Both are fine computers.

Truth is an absolute defense against libel accusations.

Really? In your world 'I need to buy a computer for school work' is 'as
specific as possible'?
No wonder you are happy with Windows. Facts and details are irrelevant
to you.

No, that's not the obvious answer.
It depends on how everything is set up. For example:
- If her school work consists entirely of research on the Internet and
writing reports, the platform doesn't matter.
- if her school work involves almost anything where she's going to
print out her work and turn it in - but never turn in an electronic
version, the platform doesn't matter.
- If her school work consists of submitting electronic copies of her
work in any file format that the Mac will handle (like Word, Excel, PDF,
etc), the platform doesn't matter (except that Linux is somewhat less
convenient in that case).
Your knee-jerk reaction is only the right answer in a very small number
of cases - when she has to submit work electronically in a format that
the Mac won't handle - even via VPC.
>
> [The remainder of Joe's canned response snipped]
IOW, you snipped the factual part of my response - because you've
repeatedly shown that facts are meaningless to you.

Well, to be fair, while the OP was obviously just taking the piss and
trying to start a fight (like the advocacy groups need his help anyway),
this thread will be archived in Google which may very well be browsed by
someone who *is* a 13 year old schoolgirl/boy with just such a dilemma.
So it makes sense to have a least one proper reply which they can use.
Whether Joe's reply or Edwin's is the one to go for, is open to debate.

Good point... However, seeing what the SNR is in the advocacy groups,
will the little 13year old actually find their answer or will they
simply give up after being deluged by all the useless drivel...
Just a thought

Actually, that might not be the best response. Suppose she wants to be a
computer geek when she grows up? Learning to use 2 different computer
systems when young might be better for her than standardizing on just one.

A good old Commodore 64 should do the trick for ya, heck, most of the people
who are replying to these posts had a Commodore 64 when they were thirteen,
and look at where they are today! ;-)

I had believe completely that you were a 13 years old girl...
Maybe because your mind it's like the one of a 13 year old child
and you like to wear girl's dresses.

Hey, my oldest daughter is 13 and she's got way more sense that this
idiot. For that matter, my youngest does too, and she's only four!

Thankfully, the commode didn't exist when I was 13 and when it HAD finally
been released I was old enough to have the sense to pick a decent computer.

That's the point where Ragosta flies off the handle spreading FUD,
waving and making *stupid* statements such as "PC users spend *all* of
their time troubleshooting Windows", not to mention the whining and
bitching like a little girl and the "I don't know how to top pop-ups,
therefore I'm going to spend money on a new computer", while at the same
time he uses Windows extensively at *his* company.
Furthermore, he is *so* clueless about Windows, utterly and definitely,
that he doesn't even know that adaware, spybot and all anti-virus
programs run in the background.
Seems that this is the week that Ragosta has had a taste of his foot, if
not *both* of his feet, on a daily basis.

That's funny since you're the one running around like a mad man spewing
all sorts of lies.

Nope. I never made that statement.

Wrong. We've applied several popup blockers and they don't work. PC
Magazine also agrees that the best popup blocker only gets 80%

So you join Edwin in being too stupid to understand. Figures.

Yet they still require some user interaction. Regardless, they don't
work.

Not at all. But, then, since you've demonstrated a complete inability to
tell the truth, it's not surprising you think so.

Yeah, but it was an instantly bootable bucket of swill. Too bad
Windows (or, for that matter, the PC!) hasn't quite figured out
how to do that yet.
(Admittedly, I'm given to understand one can burn a BIOS based
on Linux that will boot an entire system in less than 10 seconds.
Of course, that's without a lot of stuff, presumably.)

Well, that's cos almost every 8bit computer released in the late 70s or 80s
was ROM based... Bit awkward updating your kernel when the whole thing +
libs is in ROM.

Initial bootcode was rom, but cp/m machines, and flex machines, all read
dos from the disks, afaik.

It's specific enough for a 13 year old child, whose biggest
preoccupation is school.

Sweat the details out of that little girl, Joe! LOL
I'm "happy" with Windows for the same reason your employees are...
oops... that means they don't care about "facts and details," eh?

You're the only one giving a "knee-jerk reaction. I didn't advise
'her' against the Mac, or to get Linux or Windows. I told her to get
whatever her school is using. That may well be Macs.

A 13 year old child shouldn't be expected to learn two different
computer platforms. End of discusssion.

Amiga went through a number of interesting perversions.
The A1000 had no ROM (or maybe a very small snippet
that could read Kickstart from floppy and put it into
a special RAM area, that I think was called KickRAM;
this is otherwise standard RAM that was made read-only
once loaded). The A2000 introduced more conventional
ROM into the equation, although there was at least one
adapter kit that could flip between WB 1.3 and WB 2.0
(control-Amiga-Amiga held down for 5-10 seconds triggered
the flip, IIRC).
I don't remember whether the Amiga could load KickRAM from a hard disk.
But agreed, almost every computer prior to the PC either had no
brains at all (in my 1802's case I had to key in a loader -- I
implemented at one point a hex keypad as a hack), or most of
the OS was in ROM (e.g., Apple ]['s Basic). Even the very first
PCs would boot into Basic if they couldn't find anything better
to boot ("better", of course, being MSDOS in most cases, back then).
But it sure made them a little more fun; one didn't have
to wait for daemons to start up or for the disk to rattle
away prior to login. :-)

Of COURSE you do. You stand by all your answers - no matter how many
times they're discredited.
Did you get anyone to explain to you that ATMs are not workstations, yet?

You're confusing me with Joe Ragosta. I admit to errors if they can
be proven to me.

Again you confuse me with Joe Ragosta... have you met him? He's the
guy who's supposed to be documenting his claim that Apple outsells all
other Unix vendors combined.

ROTFLMAO. You should probably consider a career as a comedian. After
all, you might as well get paid for it.

Of course. I'm the one who keeps pointing out how silly it was for you
to claim that ATMs are workstations.

Hehe - yeah. I've the bits of an original 'portable' which booted

As Microsoft Windows will be shoved at kids by the government through
schools because Bill G's made some charitable donation or other, then you
can be sure that your kids will learn about Microsoft Windows anyway.
Rather than have them believe that computing is really that bad, you
can do what I've done, which is allow your kids to experience the huge
range of other operating systems which are out there.
Freedos, Linux, BSDs are all, err, free & open. I think you can get a
version of BeOS for free, licensing is not open, but you can still try it.
Solaris x86 I think is a free download (if enormous). DRDOS is free for
personal use, and CP/M-86 is still bootable on a modern PC, although it
lacks the richness of software which more modern OSes have.
I've you've the money to spare, a Mac and OSX might be of interest.
Also, the latest incarnation of OS/2 is still around, although it's
had a name change. It has staunch fans, and is still considered to
be a better windows than windows by many of those people. You pay,
though.
My kids have no problem with using different OSes, so don't be fooled
by the marketing people who tell you that 'one way is best', it's not.

Amiga isn't dead either. Amiga OS 4 will be released... someday.

Its not that hard to see. In academia, we might be 5 UNIX Workstations
per year, ie: Sun, SGI, HP, IBM, but will by Apple machines by the truck
load, think media labs with 30+ G5's in them at a time. Then, there is
a matter of Powerbooks which are being bought like crazy, and no UNIX
vendor has an answer for that. Sun Microsystems recently started
shipping an Opteron Workstation with Linux (or Solaris x86) installed,
this might help them ship some more units. When buying servers on the
other hand, its the total opposite.

Thanks. And you ought to consider a career change that would allow you to
fully use your 'skill set,' such as being a hat rack or a crash dummy...

That's subjective and anecdotal. Joe Ragosta (aka TravelinMan) needs to
document his claim that Apple outsells all other Unix vendors combined. He
just snips that and runs away.

Edwin, you made a claim that was damned close to it, if not that
exactly, when you were trying to defend your claim that 830 million
workstations were sold in the first half of 2004.

This should help you out, if you're bright enough to do the math...
"May 29, 2002
Sun Microsystems continues as the world's top UNIX workstation vendor
By Jeremy Reed
Sun Microsystems, Inc. continues as the world's top UNIX workstation
vendor with 68 percent market share for global shipments and 25 million
in global revenue according to Q1CY'02 results from analyst firm IDC. In
shipments terms, Sun outpaced all competitors combined. In revenue
terms, Sun's year-over-year gain of three percent, compared to IBM's
loss of five percent, extended Sun's share to 42 percent of the market."
<http://www.serverwatch.com/news/article.php/1404301>
So in 2002, Sun sold something on the order of $100 million of Unix
workstations for 68% of the market in 2002. If we assume a very low
estimate of $500 per unit, that represents 200,000 systems. So the
overall Unix workstation unit sales were 294,000 in 2002.
Apple's PowerMac sales *alone* in 2002 were 766,000. It's total unit
sales for 2002, were 3,101,000, so even if my analysis of other Unix
vendor's workstation sales is out by a factor of ten, Apple would still
sell more Unix systems than all of them combined.
Happy to help.

It was exactly that.
He was defending his 830 million workstation number and said that the
number included ATMs.
