Configuring the Master Browser in a peer-to-peer network

  • Follow

I have a small peer-to-peer network consisting of:

My main computer (on most of the time)
My "alternate" computer (on sometimes)
My laptop (on seldom)
My Wife's main computer (on most of the time)
My wife's laptop (on sometimes)

All of my computers are XP Pro, both of my wife's computers are Macs.
We often share files between any given computer (and currently computer
browsing/sharing is working perfectly).

What is the best way to setup the Master Browser (both laptops would never
need to be the MB) ?

If I configure my computer to be the MB and the other ones not to be, if my
computer is off will this interfere with seeing the other computers on the
network (I assume yes)?

How should I configure "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
\Browser\Parameters"

Should I just leave everything the way it is and ignore the event log
errors, or is there a more efficient way to set this up?

Currently I am getting these events logged (Computer2 can sometimes be
Computer3, etc):

Event ID 8021 Browser

The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master
\\COMPUTER2 on the network
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{404E201B-137A-3224-BB4B-4C4783755FCF}. The data is the
error code.

----------------------

Event ID 8003 MRXSMB
The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer
COMPUTER2 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on
transport NetBT_Tcpip_{404E201B-137A-322. The master browser is stopping or
an election is being forced.

Also,

in addition to the "MaintainServerList" setting I also see a
"IsDomainMaster" setting.

Thanks
