iSCSI and OpenVMS 8.4

Does anyone have any insight into how open the implementation will be - i.e. will it be fairly happy to talk to most storage vendor stuff out there? I know I'm a mere hobbyist but I'm seriously considering forking out for a DroboPro (the new releases will support iSCSI) to centralise all my storage needs, and would love to get it working with OpenVMS. Is this likely to work out? Sampsa

GCR CacheTape 6250bpi auto-loading 9-track SCSI tape drive

I was digging through the garage and found this behemoth behind some Christmas decorations and a box of laserdiscs. I think the last time I used it was in 1997, before I switched over to 4mm tape. Does anyone actually use these any more? The thing weighs a ton. If I recall, it arrived in a wooden crate suitable for shipping Tutankhamun. I just unloaded 14 pre-Pentium towers on the local Goodwill computer center last weekend and with a half-dozen monochrome and CGA monitors. I can't wait to see the look on the face of the poor guy on the receiving dock when I back in with this p

Does anyone have a current email address for Matt Madison, developer of NEWSRDR? Alternatively, someone (a reader of comp.os.vms?) familiar with a) VMS, b) the NNTP protocol and c) the C programming language might be willing to do the community a favour of Matt doesn't. Linker Question: Collect option

I have a program which has about 100 separate modules. Each module puts a small amount of data (16 bytes) into psect FOO. I want to find the start and end of the data. I create an entry point FOO_START when psect FOO is first defined. To find the ending address, I create a second psect FOO_END_PSECT, with an entry point FOO_END in it. Nothing else goes into FOO_END_PSECT, it has length 0. In a linker options file I put the following: psect=foo, con, octa, nowrt, noexe psect=foo_end_psect,con,octa,nowrt,noexe collect = fooCluster,foo,foo_end_psect It works...sort of. The linker

DEC Park Reading UK (Worton Grange) is no more

Some readers may know of the former "DEC Park" in Reading near the delightful Junction 11 on the Motorway M4, which for many years was DEC UK's headquarters, housing various bits of DEC UK. It stopped being a DEC building a few years ago, and the remaining occupants largely relocated elsewhere (e.g. HP in Bracknell a few miles away). Since then the site has been largely unoccupied. I happened to drive past it a few days ago on the way to somewhere entirely unrelated. Except I didn't drive past it because it wasn't there any more because it's been demolished. Amazingly, there ar

Txn Isolation levels Rdb to 11g

Hi, Having for many years been spoilt with the beauty and simplicity of Rdb's default SERIALIZABLE isolation level I have to say that I was quite surprised to find the default, and most common, 11g option to be READ COMMITTED. So I looked around the web at sites such as: - http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/05-nov/o65asktom.html and was scratching my head at what strategy Rdb people who've moved to Orrible Oracle were deploying. My personal preference would be that all queries (get data for display/report) should be READ ONLY transactions (can't snap errors notwit

Sub-second delay

I know there are a couple of old posts about this, but it might be that there is better support in newer versions of OpenVMS. I'm looking for the ability to specify a delay of approx. 0.2 seconds. The program is written in Fortran and Pascal, but I'm assuming I can use the common calling standard so a c subroutine would be fine too. Thanks, Mark.

SLRN?

Hello, the newsreader SLRN was once available for VMS. The newer releases are not. Thus, has anyone tried to adapt it to OpenVMS? Although the author has no longer access to a OpenVMS system he is willing to incoroprate any patches to make it work again. SLANG compiles and builds all right. But not SLRN :-( Regards, Christoph Gartmann -- Max-Planck-Institut fuer Phone : +49-761-5108-464 Fax: -80464 Immunbiologie Postfach 1169 Internet: gartmann@immunbio dot mpg dot de D-79011 Freiburg, Germany http://www.immunbio.mpg.de/home/m

EBA0: device

This week was spent mainly on installing VMS V8.3 on two Digital Server 5305's and one Alpha Server 1200. I wanted an NI cluster to play with. All three systems use a copy of the same set of command procedures called in SYSTARTUP_VMS to set them up as I prefer. One 5305 wasn't reachable by LAT, LAT was started but ANALYSE/SYSTEM and SHOW LAN told me that LAT wasn't started correctly. I saw a device however that was new to me: EBA0: and EBA2:, both off-line. EBA0: is an SMLAN device and should be able to run at 30 Mb/s. The system is currently not reachable so I can't post details yet.

ODBC driver on VMS ?

Hi. On the "Python for VMS" site, on the "History, what's new" page ("http://www.vmspython.org/History") it says : "Update UnixODBC, for Python support, start a Rdb driver." I have asked on the specific forum on that site about this, but didn't get any good (as far as I can tell) answer so far. Is there anything like "ODBC drivers" that runs on VMS ?? The page also points to this page : "http://code.google.com/p/pyodbc/" but I can not find anything VMS related there. I can't see how this module in the specific VMS port of Python is ment to be used (on VMS)...

QBUS Prototyping

Does anyone know where I might find QBUS prototyping boards? On an even longer shot, is there any chance someone here actually has some sitting around collecting dust that they would be willing to let go for a reasonable price? I have a hardware experiment I am interested in trying if I can find a couple of boards to play with. bill -- Bill Gunshannon | de-moc-ra-cy (di mok' ra see) n.
