DEC 19-inch CRTs with BNCs - Free for the taking

  • Follow

Apologies - this post is really for folks local to the greater Chicago
area and/or within driving distance (whatever that means to you) of zip
code 60544...

Down here in "the man cave", I've got two VRT19-DAs. These are, of
course, Sony Trinitrons. They have only three BNCs meaning they're "sync
on green".

Now, these things weigh over 80 lbs. and in the five years they've been
sitting on the floor down here my back has gone south in a major way - I
can no longer lift them or get them up the stairs and out of this
basement.

They both worked last time I tried them (about seven years ago).

If anyone wants either or both of them, they are free for the taking,
provided you supply the man-power and transportation.

My next day off (like today) is 25-Jun-2009 - that's 30-plus days
notice.

I'll hang to these until then.

After that, I will ask my nephew to come over and load them into the car
so I can take them to the nearest electronics recycling center (likely
the one in Shorewood, IL).

If you're outside my area and REALLY absolutely have to have one or
both, understand that crating these up and shipping them (surface
transportation (truck)) will be COSTLY! Be prepared to pre-pay for
shipping! I'm lucky if I can afford to pay attention these days!

I also have two VAXstation4000-VLCs. Anyone can have those as well.
They're small enough to do eBay with them. The cost to ship VLCs by UPS
runs around $35, as I recall, unless you can arrange to pick them up
here.

Very nice monitors. Please, someone give them a good home.

Wish I was close enough to make the drive. I could really use them.

I am interested in the Vaxstations 4000 VLC? Are you going to list
them on ebay? Am located in Halifax, Canada.

I have 2 VR290-DA's (color) and a VR262 (mono) in my basement, all have sat
there for 5+ years, worked when they were salvaged from work. My wife would
be very happy to see them go and I have no use for them at the moment. I am
in south central MA between Worcester and Providence. Probably still too
long a drive from PA, however.

I know this is really heartless to say, BUT...

Old CRT monitors consume orders of magnitude more power then modern LCD
ones.

Consider the impact when your municipality will stop picking up old CRTs
in regular garbage and you will have to drive to some disposal/recyling
centre to get rid of your old CRTs.

Well, no - not heartless. However, the options for substitutes remain
obscure and a bit dicey.

....and not the same collector's value as the genuine article.

We're already there. Hence, the mention of the recycle center...

Actually, the scavenger service will take them, but the city is entirely
within its rights to cite us for improper disposal.

I've been reluctant to ship internationally due to the cost and the
potential delays.

Anything I do put on eBay, though, would be no reserve, essentially sold
for the cost of shipping and whatever it gets bid up to after an opening
bid of $0.99.

I've got the two VLCs (I've had private and NG inquiries for both of
them already, so likely no auction), five or six MicroVAX 3100s (Model
10/20, 8MB RAM, no disk). Three of them will boot from a V6.2 CD ([SYS1]
is the interactive environment like Alpha, [SYS0] is SABKUP). Three of
them have issues, but may be resurrectable(?) or good for parts (good
PS?, etc.).

I've also got a VAXstation 3100, an InfoServer-100 (no o.s. or
software),
two SA350-JA shelves with two 150W power supplies each and a good
handful of RZ28s.

That's pretty much my complete inventory except for a couple of small
Alphas I'll keep for myself (Jensen, AS200/233) for a while longer. When
I finally complete my transition out of EDP, I'll probably let those go,
as well. I expect my new career will keep me travelling most of the
time. Prob'ly get by on a newer laptop or two.

The almighty MicroVAX II also consumes more power than a laptop. :=)

People wanting these probably have several computers running, so the
additional power is not that much---especially if the computers are
always on, and the monitors switched on only when needed.

While there are LCD monitors for ALPHA, I don't know if there are any
which will work with VAX.

My NEC 1980SX monitors had no problems with a vaxstation 3100. They can
do sync on green. Just had to solder an adaptor from DEC's 15 pin
connector to the VGA type of connector.

So? What about the electricity and hazardous stuff that's needed to
build an LCD? Will the higher power consumption of a monitor that's
only turned on every so often be actually more harmful to the
environment than a shiny new LCD? CRTs are easier to recycle, too.

I'm using a NEC LCD2010 on my VS3100-30 SPX. As long as you can match
the monitor's native resolution (GPX cannot but SPX can) and can do
sync on green with a refresh rate within the limits of the monitor,
they'll work.. I don't miss my VR299s that much.

At home I have a VRC20 connected to the PWS. I'd have no qualms
replacing it with another NEC flat panel just to get back some desk
space, but in that case I probably would miss the display quality (the
VRC is a high end Mitsubishi Diamondtron and weighs a ton).

Some of the next gen NECs (2010X and similar, and the aforementioned
1980SX) still provided sync on green, but with VGA and DVI connectors;
mine has BNC and VGA. There are adapter cables available (via ebay,
and others) that will take an existing multiple BNC-end cable and
convert it to a VGA for use with those monitors. The generation after
that dropped SOG though. And now, of course, its getting hard to find
square aspect ratio monitors as all the manufacturers opt for trendy
(and "cheaper" due to lower vertical resolution) widescreens.

You can usually find the specs for major brand monitors online. Look
for synch on green. There is a cable number for the DEC adapter, but
as JF has mentioned, you should be able to make your own as well.

As I recall, on my older VGA-only LCD's, the Samsungs have synch on
green and the Dells do not. YMMV.

Umm, that happened years ago. Actually, they will pick them up,
but only after you stop by the town offices and buy a recycling
tag for it for about $25 US (per CRT.)

And then they wonder why people just take them out and dump them.

It used to be a nightmare recycling electrical goods here in
Switzerland. Retailers would take old stuff back when you purchased new
kit, but if you didn't make a purchase, they could and would charge
quite a lot. Theoretically you could take kit back to where you
purchased it, but when you had imported a load of stuff that didn't
quite work.

What they did circa 2003 was to introduce a recycling charge on
purchases of electrical goods. It's a sufficiently small charge that it
doesn't hurt and you can take stuff back to any electrical store, no
purchase required.
