Just bought a 4TB NAS and would like to connect up to our ES45 OVMS
7.3 in house system. Does anyone know how to do this??????

Isn't "NAS" just short for "Network-attached storage" ??
There must be 100's of different "NAS" stuff out there...

Without more information than you gave us and assuming you run an IP
stack on the Alpha, I'd guess that nfs is what you'd need.

If you have Pathworks, you could just mount the disk using Pathworks.
You should be able to FTP to/from the NAS device with or without
Pathworks. I don't think you will be able to create an ODS-2 or ODS-5
file system on it.

Yes we do have an IP Stack and the supported interfaces for the NAS
are
FTP/SMB/CIFS/AFP/NFS Network Protocols Support; Shared Storage for
Windows, Unix, Linux, MAC clients.
I was hoping that someone has already done this with OVMS.

What you need is either a CIFS client or an NFS client. There is no
CIFS client available for OpenVMS 7.3 that I'm aware of. MultiNet has
an NFS client option available - I don't know if UCX does.
The short answer, there's no really good & easy way to use an external
NAS appliance from OpenVMS 7.3.
If your NAS happens to be a NetApp filer, then you can request a PVR
from NetApp for fibre channel LUN support...

We are running advanced server but we still need a way to connect the
NAS to the Alpha so advanced server can map a share.

If the NAS and the Alpha are both connected to the same Ethernet, you've
got your connectivity. Physical connectivity anyway! You need some
sort of software on the Alpha that can recognize and use the disk!
Pathworks seems the most likely candidate but something else might do
the job as well.
I have an NAS drive on my home network and my PC uses it without
problems and my wife's PC could if she were so inclined. I've never
tried with my Alpha. . . .

NSF mount the disk and "share" the mounted device ?
But on the other hand, why go through the VMS systems ?
Why not let your PC's connect the NAS directly ?

Do you know if TCPIP stack on OVMS supports NFS mount? Another
guy thought Multinet has an NFS client. Open to any thoughts!!!!

I disagree - at my last VMS job, I was tasked to connect the local VMS
boxes to a NAS, so that we could backup VMS to the NAS, and get rid of
tape drives. Done in a day - if I knew more about NFS, I could have
done it quicker (I spent most of the day teaching myself about NFS
client on VMS).

No. Pathworks & Advanced Server are SMB *servers*. They have no
*client* functionality.

Actually it depends on which stack and which version... TCPIP Services
5.x has an NFS client and server. And at one time Advanced Server had a
client as well as server (used it many years ago) - but also don't
remember what it was called. (smbclient??) I know that SAMBA has this
(used it before as well...)
Directory SYS$COMMON:[SYSMGR]
TCPIP$NFS_CLIENT_SHUTDOWN.COM;1
TCPIP$NFS_CLIENT_STARTUP.COM;1 TCPIP$NFS_SHUTDOWN.COM;1
TCPIP$NFS_STARTUP.COM;1 TCPIP$PCNFS_SHUTDOWN.COM;1
TCPIP$PCNFS_STARTUP.COM;1
Follow the directions in the docs for how to use NFS.

smbclient exists for some versions of Samba - Linux yes, Solaris, no.
Samba doesn't exist for OpenVMS 7.3
Advanced Server, to the best of my recollection, has never provided
for an SMB client for VMS. Please don't confuse Advanced Server with
TCP/IP Services - it does not depend on which stack or version. No
version has provided client functionality (hence the name Advanced
*SERVER*).
Using the NFS client on VMS may possibly also give you some grief with
the NAS device. Certainly, not all products that claim to be NAS do
NFS, and even if it does NFS, prepare yourself with some fun with UID/
GID mappings. You may or may not (and likely not) have ACL support.
I
The original poster never said what brand of NAS or exactly what level
of functionality he wanted. Without hacks (such as Glenn Everharts's
pseudo-disk driver) there's no way it's just going to look like
another VMS disk drive.

Some that don't can load freely available firmware supporting NFS.
(Especially if they run linux internally.)

Sigh - JF and I have stuffed around (Australian)/diligently experimented
(North American/British/?) connecting OVMS to NFS for some time - our
experiences vary with JF having much more success in my opinion. In my
case, I have has OVMS8.2 connected to and using a Windows2008
server-based NFS for about 6 months - it took over 6 months to get it to
work properly.......
I have recently created a "new" NAS using FreeNAS and followed all the
instructions to set it up for NFS serving. I can connect to it using
Windows (2000, 2003, 2008, XP, Vista), Solaris 10, OSX, HP/UX and
assorted Linuxen. OVMS - no way!!! I know OVMS NFS client works (it
will talk to the old NFS server) but using identical parameters to the
new one won't go.
Short answer, it probably works but seems to be a hand-crafted solution
each time depending upon how close the NAS NFS server is to responding
to OVMS client requests in a way that OVMS likes - and OVMS doesn't give
you any useful hints when it doesn't like it!!
Good luck
(JF, you may have more constructive things to add than I did....)

Don't know! It has been more than ten years since I had, or needed, a
Pathworks license!

Yes, but, speaking as one who has, in the past, used VMS NFS rather
extensively, there is a big difference between using it to backup
your system on (like a tape drive) and using it for user access from
dis-similar machines.

not sure if you meant to put a period after 7.3, but if you did... I am
running 7.3-2 and SAMBA and
Directory SYS$SYSDEVICE:[SAMBA.BIN.ALPHA]
SMBCLIENT.EXE;1
and have connected/read/written data to a "windows share" and it may
have been this utility I used rather than anything from AdvServer. It
WAS a long time ago (10+years)...

Stack/version was in reference to NFS not smb. TCPIP Services has NFS
client AND Server.

I have connected my VMS box to the Netgear 1-4TB NAS appliance via NFS.
Really nice.

If that's a VMS port of the widespread smbclient utuility, it doesn't
VMS-mount an SMB filesystem as such (Len said "we still need a way to
connect the NAS to the Alpha so advanced server can map a share.") but
it does allow ftp-style access to files on an SMB filesystem, which
might or might not be sufficient here.
I can't help wondering if the time to have asked this question might
have been *before* picking and purchasing a NAS box. It might not have
changed the outcome, but the decision would have been better informed.

Juat talked to an old VMS guy and he thought CIFS might be the way to
go.
Has anyone ever done this??? Appears to be supported with later
versions
of OVMS.
