Eisner takes a little trip

  • Follow

Eisner is not back online yet, but it made its first leg of that journey
today. I picked it up in Fitchburg, WI and hauled it over to East Troy,
WI where it should be very happy in its new home. There was no time
today to set it up and troubleshoot it; it was purely unload-and-run,
but I'm sure Bill will be able to bring it back to life in short order.

A little shoebox full of vacation photos:

Congratulations on your new adopted baby. May this new bundle of joy
bring you and the community many hours of hassle free computing !!!!

As a side note, I think a big thank you should still go to the former
maintainer. Just because his/her tenure as Eisner manager didn't end
seamlessly doesn't preclude the fact that he/she/it did maintain the
system for a number of years as a volunter.

Fantastic! Thank you very much for your efforts.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to
assist.

Same here. However, I didn't know Eisner was moving house. Last I'd
heard, there was no communications from Stephen. Let us know when you
have Eisner back up and internet accessible.

Let's get rid of the RAID and get HBVS running too. I've never liked
the idea of having to take the machine down, muck with SRM/ARC, and a
PeeCee BIOS looking RAID mgt utility.

The relocation was to WCF Associates, accepting Bill Norton's generous
offers.

Duncan had previously offered to pick up the hardware and move it, and had
attempted to coordinate with Steve.

George Cornelius was instrumental in getting this moving. George traveled
to Fitchburg, eventually (the next evening) spoke to Steve, and subsequently
"stuff happened".

Although relocating the system to Troy was the easier alternative, we may
(eventually) accept Alan Frisbie's offer to arrange a backup site in Los
Angeles.

And, I will also note that the pictures constitute the first time I have
actually "seen" the system

I totally agree with this.

I'll take this opportunity to thank Steve for the years that he's run
Eisner and for all the time and resources he's spent managing it.

Simon.

good. Additionally I have sent 2 full sets of the sigtape materials to

If you are going to keep the RAID setup, I have a 3-channel KZPAC in
a system we took out of service today. It has the write back cache
battery which is still fully charged, and its firmware is the latest
version. I can pay the shipping.

East Troy !! Love going there for the rail museum and the dinner
train, especially during the autum season. We took the last dinner
train in 2008 and look forward to our '09 visit.

Also like camp Timber Lee down the road a piece. Our kids have fond
memories of the place.

Sorry - now back to Eisner / VMS business.

Thanks for the update.

Great work, Duncan! Sorry I could not have been there to help, but it
made a lot of sense for you to be doing it because of your geographic
location and because you had done the coordination with Bill.

I'm just happy I could help in a small way by getting some channels
of communications open.

Everyone who mailed Steve Arnold when Eisner went offline was placed on
a mailing list which he is hosting.

Other than trying to mail Steve, I've no idea about how you might go
about getting on the mailing list.

Simon.

I haven't actually tested this, but sending a letter to
Eisner-request@Arnold.COM with

SUBSCRIBE Eisner [optional different email address]

in the body (no subject necessary) should do it. If your user agent
appends a signature, then do this -

  SUBSCRIBE Eisner [...]
  END

to prevent it from being taken as commands.

You will get a confirmation reply; you must confirm to subscribe.

That said, Eisner is currently up and reachable at <67.53.90.116>,
although work on it is still in progress.

For those who have seen this saga from afar (c.o.v.), was the disk array
repaired, or was disk storage rebuilt from backup ?

Please remember that work is still going on, and not all functions are
available (yet).

The system may be rebooted (or taken offline for a while) without notice.

And, if your account has expired - just read the login message, which
essentially says:

To renew your account, log in as user REGISTRATION, and supply your
DECUS/DECUServe registration number.

[If you don't remember what that is, send email to me and I'll find it for
you]

Does this apply to people who did not have an account int he past but would
like one now?

I know I have a DECUS ID card on my desk somewhere I assume that is the
number you are looking for.

Well, "sorta".

Reading the login message _applies_.

When you do that, you'll see that it says to log in as REGISTRATION. If you
don't already have account, just follow the subsequent directions. A
"DECUServe Number" will be assigned.

Thank you. I will give it a try later when I get done putting out all
