HP said it will commit code to the Linux kernel, working with Red Hat as its
mission critical Linux distribution, and added that it wants to work with
the open source community rather than just do its own thing.

Red Hat has already said it will be shutting down development of its popular
Linux distribution for Intel's IA64 architecture.

Haven't they already, several years ago?

This below made me cringe, a direct quote from the article in the
Inquirer rag:

"HP, which has a long history of developing and maintaining
its own UNIX operating systems such as HP-UX and VMS[.]"

They called VMS a UNIX operating system. How much do credibility do
these people have?

So, basically HP says they will not only honour their legal obligation
under the
GPL license to make sources available for anything they change or add
to the Linux
kernel, but now even submit some patches to the Linux kernel
developers.
The world will never be the same.

They already dropped IA64 from RHEL6. Linux and Windows on IA64 haven't
been supported by HP for quite a while now. So what's the news?

Project Odyssey has nothing to do with Itanium. It is all about scaling
the 8086 to Superdome class machines to become HP's main BCS offerings.

If you look at Oracle's claims against HP as well as HP's announcement
of Odyssey, it all falls into place nicely.

And yes, Odyssey involved porting HP-UX enterprise features to Linux to
make it easier for HP-UX customers to move to Linux on 8086s.

The news is that HP is continuing with its plan to move BCS to
Linux/Windows and port some of the HP-UX goodies to Linux to help its
customers migrate.

Every step it takes in that direction makes it harder for it to rethink
its strategy of abandonning its IA64 opersting systems at the EOL of
Itanium.

According to documents filed by Oracle, 2012 was to have been the year
HP would fess up that IA64 is a dead end and start helping its customers
migrate so the migration would be done within 5 years when the last
IA64s ship.

Had it not been for Oracle's accusations which HP automatically denied,
it would have been easier for HP to formally announce that IA64 was
being put out of its misery after Kittson. Having denied this was true,
it becomes harder for HP to fess up to the fact that IA64 has been EOLed
since 2007.

But this announcement does signal that the plan is going ahead at the
normal schedule. HP still has 8 months to announce the EOL for IA64 and
still be true to its plans to announce it by 2012.

They probably got this from HP !@#$
This is what I got today when I tried HP-VirtualRooms
( https://www.rooms.hp.com/attend/default.aspx )
running CSWB on my OpenVMS8.4-alpha and selected
"testing my browser":

Your browser did not pass the test. See below for some issues that we
discovered.

     * ERROR: Your operating system (VMS UNIX) is not supported

That is what I got as a response from [1]:

| * ERROR: Your browser (Mozilla) is unsupported. We support, and

"Internet Exploiter" as the _only_ supported browser on Windows platforms??

Not good at all. It told me that I need Administrator access, and I
cannot quote the text because it kept shoving me back to the download
page.

If corporate users on locked down PCs are their target, they have lost
the plot.

If it likes Frefox on Linux, why does not not allow Firefox on a Mac ?

I tried with Safari. It declared I was good enough but the wanted me to
install some unnamed and undescribed software on my system. Are you
kidding ?

At least tell me exactly what you intend to install on my system.

I verified my Firefox on Win7 just fine.

As with mixed VAX/Alpha/IA64 clusters, there seems to be a
difference between what is "supported" and what actualy "works". :-)
