Considering Mac OS-X is linux, no one should be surprised that holes in
linux will also impact OS-X. Linux's security by obscurity is no longer
working.

Mac OS X is NOT Linux. Linux is a kernel that popularly ships with
enough gnu utilities to be considered on OS. Mac OS X does not use
the Linux kernel.

OSX is not Linux. It is Mach and FreeBSD.

MacOSX is based on a Mach Micro kernel (just like
Digital/Compaq/HP Tru64 UNIX, aka OFS/1, aka Digital UNIX).
On top of Mach is FreeBSD. Tru64 put BSD on top of Mach with some
AT&T System V licensed bits on the side.
Apple most likely choose FreeBSD because it had a BSD license that
allowed for commercial distributions without requiring it be open
sourced. Apple did eventually open source the Mach/FreeBSD bits
as Darwin, but that was much later in the development cycle, and
they got to put their own Apple open source license on it, rather
than GNU GPL License.
And before anyone asks, HP would find it difficult to open source
Tru64 UNIX as it has a lot of licensed bits in it, and I don't
think HP would want to try an untangle the legal issues to allow
them to open source it :-)

I stand corrected on the OS-X base. I had read somewhere that it was Linux
based. Obviously my source, which was one that usually gets it right, was
incorrect - probably confused FreeBSD with Linux. FreeBSD has been around a
lot longer. As for using the Inquirer as a source, I have noticed that it
tends towards the sensationalist side, so I always double check it's
articles and have discovered that it frequently doesn't give the whole
story.
As for being a troll - I'm not. Trolls post continuously with the intention
of inflaming people. My post was simply in error. Actually, there have
been a series of posts in this newsgroup flaming other OSs for security
holes, which unfortunately they tend to have. However, VMS is DYING on the
vine because HP won't market it. Blasting other OS's won't change this
fact. I suspect the only way to get HP to market VMS is to get Wall Street
to drop HP's stock price because VMS isn't marketed properly. I can't see
Wall Street doing that as they don't understande the value of a secure,
stable OS.

I'd go one further, I don't think HP _could_ untangle the legal issues.
Compaq certainly couldn't for Pathworks/Mac, and that was a much smaller
product with many fewer licenses in the mix, and this was before
the most recent merger.

Actually shorter - unless you mean the age of parts of its codebase.
The FreeBSD handbook puts its genesis at 1993. Linux began in 1991 and
(as you undoubtedly know) has attracted a much larger developer/user
base.
The Mach project[1] began in 1985. By 1991, it had passed its 2.5
release and had been adopted as the basis of NEXTSTEP. OS X is based on
Mach 3.0 and XNU.

Like /. article summaries, they can be very erratic. Whether they have
a factual scoop, or slanted hype, seems to be a matter of chance for
any given story.

Understood. My intention was humorous, not to smear your character. :)

I agree with that (with the exception that blasting Windows is always
OK :). I wish the OP would give it a rest.

If the market behaved rationally, MS would be out of business and Gates
would be working at KFC.

Yes, but Linux began in 1991 with nothing and FreeBSD just picked a slightly
different hardware path after a decade and a half of OS development and an
already functioning OS.

That just goes to show what marketing can do (brings to mind something
about a sow's ear and a silk purse.) Too bad the effort isn't spent
on something worthwhile like VMS instead of a piece of crap like Linux.
