MRU (media robot utility) for Itanium?

  • Follow

VMS 8.31H1 (and soon 8.4). I need the ROBOT utility to control the tape
drive so I can move my backups from the slower old Alpha to the Itanium
machine.

Where can I download MRU? I was long ago able to find it for Alpha via
Google, but I can't even find *that* page anymore.

Good luck. I'll bet it wasn't ported. You could give AESTing it try.

Anything in that category should be released as open-source so that
(perhaps, the few) customers who rely on it have some recourse without
expense to HP (the main reason put forward for not porting). Of course
we all have a fair idea of the chances of that happening spontaneously.
Any stirrers with any clout out there? It's not without some
precedents it seems.

No, it has been ported. I'm not certain, but I think the same kit files
(ROBOT018.A, .B, .C and .D) work with VMSINSTAL on all 3 platforms. I
have a copy on disk that I just installed on an I64 rx2660 last week.

I think I loaded it from an Alpha LP CD, but I might have downloaded
it from somewhere at HP/Compaq/DEC. V1.8 appears to be the current
version, though it is about 5 years old.

I don't remember where it hides on the LP CDs, but I think it is in a
separate subdirectory under one or more of the Backup-related layered
products (Saveset Manager [SAVESET*...], Storage Library System
[SLSG*...], Data Cartridge Server Component [DCSC*...], or Archive
Backup System [ABS*...]) where the precise directory name depends on
the version involved.

OK. I have v1.8 on Alpha but I'm no certain where to find an IA64
version for install.

I found this link:

     http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/storage/mrupage.html

It may not be a direct download link, but the claim to be able to help.

That means you must have ROBOT018.A and ROBOT018.C. .A contains the
KITINSTAL.COM, documentation, header files and sources. .C contains
the Alpha .EXE and .OLB files. ROBOT018.B should be there too, it
has the VAX .EXE and .OLB files. And ROBOT018.D contains the IA64
..EXE and .OLB files.

They did it *right*. One kit for all 3 architectures, common source.

Alan,

you should find the MRU kit in the [ABSnnn] product directory of a
recent OpenVMS I64 or Alpha LP CD. There you'll find the ROBOTE02018
(ROBOT V1.8 ECO 2) savesets, which seem to be the most current
version.

V1.8B is the latest version.

I hope the OP does have a licence for this software. Part number
BA445AA is the per core licence for Itainium. I think if you order
that you get the kit too.
As Volker said it's also available in the ABS directories of the
Condist

I'll check. Last ConDist, IIRC, are circa 2005 or 2006.

I thought ABS was chargable but MRU was free?

I think ABS includes MRU. That part number was if you just want MRU
