Screenshot of VAX Notes?

I wonder if anyone has, or could create, a screenshot of VAX Notes in
action? I could use it for a presentation on collaboration tools. VAX
Notes was my first! Thanks so much -- please EMAIL ME DIRECTLY at

I don't have a screenshot but want to remind folk that Notes was one
of the first non-obvious tools to incorporate DECwindows/CDA support,
ie pretty text, pictures and maybe even sound, and maybe even
LiveLinks (which begat OLE) and all that jazz. It was fairly obvious
that tools like DECwrite, DECpresent and the corresponding spreadsheet
(whose name I forget) needed that kind of WYSIWYG support, it was less
obvious (to some) that such a facility added significant extra value
in Notes. Sadly there weren't many workstations in DEC (not even in
the bits that really needed them), and so the facility went largely
unseen both inside and outside DEC.

In the absence of decuserve, you can still telnet to
deathrow.vistech.net, create yourself a free account, run notes, and
collect all the screenshots you desire. You may even be able to log
in as guest and do all these things.

There is a CLI and the DECwindows (aka X-windows) interface. Which one
do you mean?

I believe he probably meant the amazing, but
rarely-seen-outside-of-Digital DECDecision. What an amazing WYSIWYG
spreadsheet that was, long before PC users had such products. As near
as I can tell, it was largely written in TPU, which just makes it all
the more amazing! It was DECwindows only, wherease DECCalc and Plus
were for ASCII terminals originally. (Did they ever come out with
proper DECWindows versions of DECCalc?)

Oops, maybe... :-)

Personaly I used DECquery which was an database query tool
running (in my case at least) on PC/Windows. :-)
It had the best Rdb compatibilily at the time...

Thank you, that's the one. I remember DECalc as being a VT-type
product, I remember something very different on DECwindows, but I'd
forgotten it was called DECdecision.
