I am away and logging 0.n remotely to a node using ssh I get

MAIL> dir
%MAIL-E-NOTEXIST, folder MAIL does not exist

MAIL> sho all
Your mail file directory is DISK$COMMON:[USER.TOM.MAIL].
Your current mail file is DISK$COMMON:[USER.TOM.MAIL]MAIL.MAI.
No folder is currently selected.
The wastebasket folder name is WASTEBASKET.
Mail file DISK$COMMON:[USER.TOM.MAIL]MAIL.MAI
         contains 0 deleted message bytes.

You have 0 new messages.

You have not set a forwarding address.
You have not set a personal name.
Your editor is TPU.
CC prompting is disabled.
Automatic copies to yourself are disabled.
Automatic deleted message purge is enabled.
Your default print queue is SYS$PRINT.
You have not specified a default print form.
You have not specified a default signature file.

MAIL> dir/fold
Listing of folders in DISK$COMMON:[USER.TOM.MAIL]MAIL.MAI
      Press CTRL/C to cancel listing
WASTEBASKET

so what happened to my folders? How do I recreate MAIL folder. There
appear to lots of messages in that directory.

Tom, I log in to my systems all the time with ssh and have no problems
accessing my VMS mail.

Perhaps, you should see what DISK$COMMON equivalences to when you have
sshed in.

No it is fine. I am in my home directory. Seems to me there was a command
to repair mail, but being away I am scratching my head.

For older systems running UCX:

  $ ucx analyze mail /repair

Ah, yes, tcpip, but I am running MX as my smtp server, would that matter?

BTW, using Outlook 2003 it keeps prompting me for user and passwd
saying server rejected. What a nuisance.

This looks like either your MAIL.MAI file got stomped on, got corrupted, or
otherwise got clobbered, or you're not looking at your "real" MAIL.MAI file.

> so what happened to my folders? How do I recreate MAIL folder. There
> appear to lots of messages in that directory.

Folders are simply fields in the MAIL.MAI records.

Find out if this is your real and current MAIL.MAI file first.

Then (if it is) find out what happened to it.

Then see if you have a BACKUP of your MAIL.MAI and the usual herd of outboard
MAIL$mumble.MAI files that are used for the larger messages.

Whether or not you have a BACKUP and before you start to try to repair an
existing file or replace and existing file and/or you are about to start
analyzing the file for RMS-level corruptions, do (obviously) make a BACKUP of
the MAIL.MAI file (and the herd) before you start working with your file.
Obvious, I know, but I've missed this step occasionally. Even better, create a
copy of the problem MAIL.MAI (and its herd) and then go work on and attempt to
repair that.)

There are various VFY and repair tools for MAIL.MAI corruptions on various of
the Freeware (and particularly on the older Freeware) that can potentially be
pressed into service here. VFYMAIL comes to mind, but it's been years since
I've gone after one of these tools.

Do also check the OpenVMS ECO level, as there was a case where CONVERT had a
problem that tended to hit MAIL, and there have been occasional I/O or RMS or
caching updates for problems that could conceivably trigger a MAIL.MAI
corruption. (Without knowing the version in use here, there's no easy way to
indicate which ECOs are required, etc...)

And of course, do look to see if this is your correct MAIL.MAI. I've
certainly ended up looking at a stale MAIL.MAI file from time to time -- and
I've seen this arise when the VMSMAIL_PROFILE.DATA database and SYSUAF.DAT
become skewed, such as cases where a cluster is not completely configured, and
the full set of files isn't shared. See V7.2 and later SYLOGICALS.TEMPLATE for
that list.)

The MAIL command doesn't know/touch TCPIP. If MAIL says it can't fidn
the MAIL folder, it is something very "local" to the mail application
and your mail.mai file.

> MAIL> dir

This is normal where there are no messages in the folder.

However, if you try MC DECW$MAIL (on a workstation), it gets you the
decwindows version of MAIL which may show your empty folders.

if you do a DIR/FULL DISK$COMMON:[USER.TOM.MAIL] does it shows a
gazillion mail files ?

if you look only for MAIL.* perhaps there is a MAIL.OLD that does
contain the pointers to all your messges ?
(indicative that a MAIL COMPRESS may have failed, something which used
to happen on older version of VMS because the user did not have the
right to delete the file so the MAIL COMPRESS command would fail midway
in the convert command.

There is also the ORPHANS package on the Freeware CDs:

"ORPHANS, UTILITIES, Mail tool that checks dangling pointers in MAIL.MAI

Orphan is a mail tool that checks for mail message files with no pointers
from MAIL.MAI. It also checks for pointers in MAIL.MAI with no mail
message files."

Sounds like you have mail in a node specific directory instead of a
common directory. Also do you have your mail logicals set for cluster
operation? Do you have multiple system disks or sysuaf's

Sorry to reply to my own message but here are a couple of logicals to
look at on all the nodes. Also disregard my question of multiple system
disks as you OBVIOUSLY have them. What can I say it is 5:00 AM

   "VMSMAIL_PROFILE" =
"DISK$ALPHASYS:[VMS$COMMON.SYSEXE]VMSMAIL_PROFILE.DATA"

and

"MAIL$SYSTEM_FLAGS" = "16"

OH and

sysuaf
