OVERVIEW

Data is growing at an exponential rate and several systems have emerged=20
to store and analyze such large amounts of data. These systems, termed=20
=E2=80=9CBig data systems=E2=80=9D are fast evolving Examples include the N=
oSQL storage=20
systems, Hadoop Map-Reduce, data analytics platforms, search and indexing=20
platforms, and messaging infrastructures. These systems address needs for=20
structured and unstructured data across a wide spectrum of domains such=20
as web, social networks, enterprise, cloud, mobile, sensor networks,=20
multimedia/streaming, cyberphysical and high performance systems, and=20
for multiple application verticals such as biosciences, healthcare,=20
transportation, public sector, energy utilities, oil & gas, and scientific=
=20
computing.=20

With increasing scale and complexity, managing these big data systems to=20
cope with failures and performance problems is becoming non-trivial.=20
New resource management and scheduling mechanisms are also needed for such=
=20
systems, and so are mechanisms for tuning and support from platform layers.=
=20
Several open source and proprietary solutions have been proposed to address=
=20
these requirements, with extensive contributions from industry and academia=
..=20
However, there remain substantial challenges, including those that pertain=
=20
to such systems=E2=80=99 autonomic and self-management capabilities.

The objective of the MBDS workshop is to bring together researchers,=20
practitioners, system administrators, system programmers, and others=20
interested in sharing and presenting their perspectives on the effective=20
management of big data systems. The focus of the workshop is on novel and=20
practical, systems-oriented work. MBDS offers an opportunity for researcher=
s=20
and practitioners from industry, academia, and national labs to showcase th=
e=20
latest advances in this area and to also discuss and identify future direct=
ions=20
and challenges in all aspects on autonomic management of big data systems.

Papers are solicited on all aspects of big data management. Specific topics=
=20
of interest include, but are not limited, to the following:

* Autonomic and self-managing techniques

* Application-level resource management and scheduling mechanisms

* System tuning/auto-tuning and configuration management

* Performance management, fault management, and power management

* Scalability challenges

* Complexity challenges, as for composite, cross-tier systems with multiple=
 control loops

* Unified management of =E2=80=98data in motion=E2=80=99 and =E2=80=98data =
at rest=E2=80=99

* Dealing with both structured and unstructured data

* Monitoring, diagnosis, and automated behaviour detection

* System-level principles and support for resource management=20

* Holistic management across hardware and software

* Implications of emerging hardware technologies such as non-volatile memory

* Domain specific challenges in web, cloud, social networks, mobile, sensor=
 networks,=20
  streaming analytics, cyber-physical systems

* System building and experience papers for specific industry verticals

-----------------------------------------------------------------

PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Full papers (a maximum of 6 pages in the two-column ACM proceedings=20
format) are invited on a wide variety of topics relating to management of b=
ig
data systems. Submitted papers must be original work, and may not be under=
=20
consideration for another conference or journal. Complete formatting and=20
submission instructions can be found on the workshop web site. Accepted=20
papers will appear in proceedings distributed at the conference and availab=
le=20
electronically.=20

[Please, apologize for multiple posting] Second Call for papers SDMAS'08 Second International Workshop on Scalable Data Management Applications and Systems to be held within The 2008 International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Processing Techniques and Applications Las Vegas Nevada, USA July, 14-17 2008 http://www.arcos.inf.uc3m.es/~jdaniel/sdmas08/ ** Best papers to be published in Journal of Supercomputing ** WORKSHOP SCOPE Data management is becoming a more and more important issue in every kind of computing system. High-performance computing, data visualization, multimedia and data mining systems are examples of application areas where input/output and storage are critical issues for performance. A key challenge in those areas is how to transfer large amounts of data in and out of large-scale systems, like clusters, Grids and peer-to-peer systems. Another key point is how to transfer large amount of data in a timely manner. The aim of the workshop is to identify, discuss, and share the barriers and workarounds that have been discovered in the storage and input/output fields. Compute and I/O-intensive applications, as represented by the Grand Challenge problems, multimedia, cosmology simulation, climate modeling and collaborative large-scale visualizations, large data acquisition networks, data fussion and integration to name just a few, call for innovative approaches to alleviate the I/O devices and networks(both bandwidth and file access) bottlen...

[TCPP-announce] Second Workshop on System Management Tools for Large-Scale Parallel Systems
Second Workshop on System Management Tools for Large-Scale Parallel Systems (Held in Conjunction with IPDPS 2006, Rhodes Island, Greece) ****************************************************************************** We are entering a new era in computing where the size and complexity of scientific and engineering simulations is growing at a speed that has never been observed before. In order to satisfy the needs of these applications, parallel systems with an "extreme-scale" are being designed and deployed. Although the progress in hardware and architecture design has made it possible to build machines with tens of thousands of processors, the development of software tools for such systems is still lagging behind. To name just a few examples, new operating system level modifications are needed to efficiently utilize the massive computing and networking power. In addition, sophisticated fault-tolerant tools are in great need to minimize the performance loss under a faulty condition and to automate the recovery process which can further reduce management costs. The scale of the systems also demands advanced power management tools. From the list of top 500 supercomputers, top 10 are dominated by special purpose clusters either built using some of the standard commodities or specially built for the customers only. Even if some of the supercomputers are based on general purpose processors and networking, the system maintenance, reliability, faul...

Serenity Systems International, Managed Systems International, Inc.
Seems to be a lot of discussion about "status" ... and most of it coming from the FUD4, which means most of it is wrong. It is a time of year which calls for a look back and a look ahead. So, in Janus fashion, let's do some of that. To clear some muddy waters, the company is incorporated as Managed Systems International; filed on January 14, 1998, election effective on January 28, 1998. The "Serenity Systems International" name was registered for Managed Systems International, Inc. on January 30, 1998 in Denton County, which is the appropriate jurisdiction for businesses in Lewisville, TX. Legal documents from the state and federal government are addressed as: Managed Systems International, Inc. Serenity Systems International 765 Juniper Lane Lewisville, TX and have been received, addressed this way, since January 1998. Which means, btw, that the seventh anniversary of SSI is coming up next month. I can only hope that 2005 is as good to us as 2004 has been because 2004 was the best year, yet. No surprise, some very good things happened. First, Serenity Virtual Station was announced. This could be a topic of its own, but short story, SSI was part of the OEM agreement with Connectix and InnoTek. That direction shifted away from OS/2. SSI began a path at Warpstock Austin in 2002 which culminated in the delivery of a VM application supporting OS/2 as both a host and a guest. The only one in the industry. A product which will become m...

These risks could arise from deviations from the normal operation that could lead to a reduction or interruption of the QoS, service shortages, or incidents. Cloud Incident Management, as a novel research direction, is addressing specific issues that are related to cloud services, bringing under the same umbrella relevant topics including cloud management automation, SLA and QoS management (and specifically management of SLA incidents), Cloud forensics and targetin...
