I have 2 Seagate Cheetah ST336607LW drives connected to the above
controller. It works fine when I set one drive to operate Single-Ended but
the controller won't see the drives when I remove the SE jumper on the
drive. The ID's are set correctly (I use 0 and 8).
The drives dont have termination and the cable has got a terminator at the
end.
I would really like to use the drives LVD as I think the speed will be
better for me.
What can I try ?
Thanks

What happens if you remove that drive entirely?

Stil the same, controller does not see the drive.

Take your one drive off of LUN 8. I don't know about the LSI controllers,
but Adaptec always uses 8 for the controller itself.
Set the drives to 0 and 1 and try it again.

Nope, still no luck.
The controller comes up as ID 7, disk just before terminator as ID 0 and
second disk as ID 8
when I go into LSI program by Pressing CTRL-C during startup. I have set ID0
as Primary and ID8 as
Secondary for mirroring and the mirror works fine. The drives synchronise
and I can see the process in LSI CIMbrowser.
When I turn the synchronise off I can see and use both disks in WINXP.
Like I said before disk ID0 has got the jumper to force SE and when I remove
it the LSI setup does
not detect any of the two drives. The rest of the jumper settings on the
drives are all default (except to force SE on ID0)
Is there not something I must set in the PC BIOS ?

Nope, they never did. (The lower IDs wouldn't work).
OH, and why would that suddenly not be a problem when he sets the bus to SE?
You thought this over quite a bit, right?

Clueless.

If same happens with the other drive removed I'd say that the drives
are not the culprit but rather the controller(channel) itself or the terminator.
Does the same happen on the other channel or without the terminator attached?
Either the LVD bus is defective or the terminator is terminating in SE mode
without switching the bus to SE mode also.

Any ID is valid for the controller, so long as the operating
system doesn't make any assumptions (e.g. SGI Irix systems use 0 for the
controller).

That's news to me: all mine are 7.

I found a pleasant description of the SCSI bus arbitration process at
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/scsi/confIDs-c.html
So the overall priority sequence for wide SCSI is
7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 , 0, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8.

Default for LSI looks like 7.
