I have a brand new Quantum LTO2 HH drive and it won't show on the SCSI
bus anymore. Initially it showed for the first couple of days, but it
no longer recognizes it.
However, if I first plug in a Sony SDT-11000 drive it recognizes, then
if I pull the SCSI cable out of the Sony, and plug it into the Quantum
drive, it recognizes it (Adaptec SCSI Explorer shows CERTANCE ULTRIUM 2
Revision 1823), and cygwin mt -f /dev/nst0 status shows the drive
online. And it writes/reads fine.
I tried swapping connectors and such, but to no avail. My equipment
list: one Adaptec 1480A, two Adaptec 1460A, two 50 pin cables, two
50-68 converters, two SCSI terminators, Sony SDT 11000 DDS4 drive,
Quantum LTO2 HH drive, Toshiba U200 XP/Home.
Weird huh ? Any suggestions.

Question is, does it do that at the Sony negotiated speed or at just
async.

So you should be able to check whether it is the drive or the adapter.

So you think that you have a pretty good idea how this should work and then it
goes to prove you otherwise. Had the same experience once with an IDE CD dri-
ve where adapter and drive were on different speeds and it still somehow worked.

i'm an ee/cs but i don't know SCSI specs well enough to tell what
'negotiated speed' or 'async' means. under cygwin, mt -f /dev/nst0
status, shows the Quantum drive as type 'dds', which is strange. with
SCSI Explorer (Adaptec EZ-SCSI 5.0) it shows it as 'CERTANCE ULTRIUM2
Revision 1823'.

yes i tried all 3 adapter cards and the same thing. i swapped the list
of stuff for hours and the same thing. plus i plugged in the
termination jumper on the quantum and tried that with many combinations
to no avail.

the next thing i'm trying is ForceASPI 1.7
http://radified.com/ASPI/forceaspi.htm which replaces the XP provided
ASPI drivers. i'm a real dildo when it comes to winpuke stuff ;-) i
loaded ForceASPI already. when i try SCSI Explorer (Adaptec EZ-SCSI
5.0), more info shows now than the XP drivers did. It shows 3 ATAPI
devices for the disk drive now plus the Adaptec card, before it showed
only the Adaptec Card. I'll try plugging in the Quantum the next
chance I get. Will post my results soon...

Ii just tried the Radified ForceASPI 1.7 and ForceASPI 1.8. No luck.
Same thing. The Quantum does not recognize. As before, to get it to
recognize, II have to 1st plug in the Sony SDT-11000 drive, and then
plug in the Quantum LTO2HH.
The Adaptec 1480A, 1460D, 1460A are pretty old. Maybe the firmware is
so old it is incompatible with newer tape drives ?
I guess the next step is to try a late model Adaptec PCI-X or PCI SCSI
card. I don't own a desktop anymore and would have to buy one. Maybe I
should go that route ?
Also, I have access to a Compaq notebook with an ExpressCard slot. I
surfed around and don't see any SCSI cards available in the ExpressCard
form factor ?

This sounds like a SCSI address problem to me. These kind of issues always
come up due to address mixups or termination issues.

Which has what to do with "address mixups" exactly?

Some progress... the drive hookups and tests fine using Quantum's
winpuke programs. Quantum's DFU.exe (download firmware) detects the
Quantum LTO2 HH after I hookup everything and cycle the power on the
drive. TapeRx.exe (tape diagnostics) passed all the tests I ran.
However, Cygwin mt and TapeSnoop 1.2 still does not recognize the
drive. I tried cycling power, re-inserting and swapping Adaptec
1480A/1460D/1460A cards, cables, terninators, etc.
As before, I can still get Cygwin mt to recognize it if I 1st hookup
the Sony drive.
Next step is a) buy an Adaptec USB2XChange and try it, b) buy another
S-ATA drive, install ubuntu, and try it.

Something is wrong in the recognition/negotiation process of the Quantum
drive that you are trying to ignore by finding fault in the adapters.
They are all working fine with the Sony.
Every indication points to the Quantum as the problem, stop ignoring that.

How about TapeSnoop

What address do you currently have your drive set for? Probably zero? One
reason for not being detected could be that the drive takes too long to come
on-line on the SCSI bus after a reset. It may not respond to SCSI commands
yet when the SCSI bus is scanned. You could try setting the drive at ID 6,
to make it the last device address to be scanned. This allows another 1.5
second for the drive to become responsive.
Also, is there any difference between a cold boot and a warm restart of your
system?

That's what I wanted to know.
Then there is no inconsistency there with the rest of the findings.

So there is something in the setup process during the bios stage (in any bios)
that this drive doesn't like anymore. Apparently drivers do the initialization
just a little bit different and then it works.
Maybe they don't even negotiate speed at all and it works just async.
In the old days some SCSI peripherals negotiated themselves in dangerous
territory depending on what SCSI contoller they were and you could limit
the speed range that they were allowed to negotiate.
Usually you can still do this in the SCSI adapters bios.
I would experiment with that and see if that makes any difference in the
drive's behaviour (providing then that your adapters have that feature).

do you mean the 'bios' in the notebook (Toshiba Satellite U200) or the
firmware in the Adaptec 1480A/1460D/1460A ? i may buy a scsi card from
ratoc and try it.

I'm sorry I'm quite out of words right now.
I suggest that you make an effort and read the above paragraph once again.

Yes, why don't you do that.
You seem intend on ignoring any advice given to you anyway.

your advice is appreciated but none of the adaptec cards i have now
have an accessible bios. i have to buy and try the ratoc if i want to
use the LTO2 drive with my notebook, and see if it works out of the
box, or if it has a configurable bios. i'd have to buy a desktop pc to
use any of adaptecs pci/pci-X cards.

With the PCMCIA/Cardbus adapters not having a bios -as it turns out- it follows
that the driver is doing the initialization and this isn't working as supposed to
anymore. Supposedly it makes the Quantum go play hide and seek.

That would be the situation when you cycle the power on the Quantum and it
comes back up in Async mode.
What transfer speed does the Quantum make once you get it recognized and
working. If around 5MB/s or so this would indicate it working in Async mode.
If alot more, this would indicate some sort of renegotiation between driver
and drive and that would be puzzling to why that would work and normal driver
initialization would not.

With 'normal' SCSI controllers you can still choose modes in the driver tab of
a SCSI device in device manager. Choice is async vs sync mode.
See if there is a similar choice for the cardbus adapter connected devices.

And so it appears.
The documentation is unhelpful to not available for these things. I would have
expected a 200$ Cardbus adapter to at least have a setup utility of some sort.

Or exchange the drive for a properly working one.
That would be my choice, but hey.

Or burn money to please the gods or whatever.
