Hi all,
Can anybody please tell how I can join the developers' team of an open
project like the ones in the source forge site? I had visited the
projects link given on the source forge site but that page does not
have any option like this one (how to be a developer).
Also, if I would like to write a patch for that project, then should I
have to read the whole source code to understand what really is
happening in that project or to know which functions I can use?
Thanks in advance.

The usual way to join a 'small team' ( less than 100 ppl) i just to mail
any member of the team, or the head of the team. You can find contact
email either in the readme of the project, or in the main page of the
website.
But, you dont have to join the team to submit a patch: just grab the
code, find out where is the stuff you want to improove, rewrite the
fuction, create a diff file, and mail it to any member of the team. That
member will have a rough look at your code, patch his local tree, and if
it works fine, he will patch the main branch of the project tree.
You did not mention which particular project you think about.
If any, then go for gaim, or gaim-vv ... it is a cute project, and has
1000 of bugs and feature requests. ^^
