New Kerberos for Macintosh ships with Mac OS X 10.3

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

The MIT Kerberos Development team is pleased to announce that as part
of its ongoing collaboration with Apple, Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther")
ships with another new version of Kerberos for Macintosh pre-installed.

Improvements in Kerberos for Macintosh 5.0 include a redesigned and
streamlined Kerberos Login dialog with GUI for getting addressless and
renewable tickets, krb5 1.3.1, KDC binaries and utilities now
included, support for DNS lookups of KDCs, improved Windows
interoperability, and an updated Kerberos application with improved
appearance and performance and support for new KfM features.

For more details about new features and changes in the Mac OS X 10.3
version of Kerberos, see:

<http://web.mit.edu/macdev/KfM/Common/Documentation/release-5.0.html>

For all problems, questions, and suggestions regarding Kerberos on Mac
OS X, you should contact Apple Computer. They will relay questions to
MIT as necessary.

Mac OS X Kerberos Extras updated for Mac OS X 10.3
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Just a reminder to coincide with today's release of Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther"), the MIT Kerberos team has released an updated version of the Mac OS X Kerberos Extras that work with both Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) and Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther). The Mac OS X Kerberos Extras allow CFM-based applications, such as Eudora and Fetch, to work with OS X's built-in Kerberos. Older releases of the OS X Kerberos Extras will not work with Mac OS X 10.3. You must have the latest release (which was released back in June) for it to work with Panther. However, this new release is backwards compatible with Mac OS X 10.2 as well as supporting 10.3. Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier)
Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier) Nothing can be more frustrating than turning on your Mac only to find that it won't start up. Instead of seeing the Finder, you see a blue or gray screen, an icon of a broken folder, a kernel panic, a flashing question mark, or a computer that just sits there. What can you do? Don't worry. It could be a simple issue that you can fix yourself. Note: This article applies to Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier. Tip: If your computer won't start at all, skip to "You see a blank, gray screen" below. The first step to help your Mac start up again is to identify which symptom you see. Once you know what the symptom is, you can try to fix it. Here's a list of the most common things you might see if your Mac turns on but doesn't start up. Click the link for the symptom you see, then follow the steps to fix it. You see an empty, blue screen. You might also see a progress indicator, which looks like a colored pinwheel or spinning disc. A "broken folder" icon, a prohibitory sign, or "kernel panic" message appears. Sam Walker Apple Specialist You see a blank, gray screen. A flashing question mark appears. Are Mac OS X 10.5.8's iLife programs safe to use in Mac OS X 10.7.x and 10.8.x?
Hi. Someone told me that Mac OS X 10.7.x and 10.8.x do not come with iLife like the older Mac OS X versions (e.g., 10.5.x). I did not know this! Since my client uses iPhoto that came preinstalled on his old 2008 MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.x (10.5.8 right now), can he use the old one from 10.5.8? Or will he need a third party replacement (needs to import/copy the old image files) or buy a new iPhoto version for his photo(graph)s? I recalled he did not like iPhoto and wonder if the new one is any better. Thank you in advance. :) -- Quote of the Week: "Every ruler...

Kerberos in Mac OS X 10.4?
I just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4, and have been having problems with its implementation of Kerberos. In OS 10.3, I could access my mail on MIT's POP server using Kerberized POP. Now, in 10.4, whenever I try to access it, I get an error in the Console: "krb_sendauth() failed: error code 255". When I run the Kerberos app hidden in the System directory, I see that while on 10.3 my tickets were listed as "v4/v5", in 10.4 I only see "v5". Could this be why my email isn't working? If so, how do I convince 10.4's Kerberos to get v4 tickets? If not, any idea what the problem actually is? I have a support request in with Apple about this, but I doubt they'll get to it for a while. Also, I'm not on this list, so if you could include me in your replies, I'd appreciate it. MAC OS 10.3 kerberos error
Hello, I am working on setting up a eMAC running OS 10.3 and using its built in kerberos 5 to authenticate through our sever dce.psu.edu. I am receiving an incorrect net address error when i try to grab a ticket from our server from the MAC. Now our server is only kerberos 4. I have read that kerb 4 servers cannot talk to kerb 5 clients. Is there anyway i can modify the MAC OS kerberos 5 to talk to the kerb 4 server so i can get a ticket from it or is this an issue i will have to address with the server manager and his group or am i just doing things wrong. I have an addon tool under my MAC utilities to help me grab a ticket when I want to and change a few functions of the kerberos. This I obtained from The University of Michigan. Panther: A Switcher's Guide to What's New in Mac OS X 10.3
http://www.theideabasket.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=76&page=0 Interesting article... Some quotes from the conclusion: "Panther isn't perfect, but it's damn close. It's overall the best operating system I have ever used. I might have said the same thing back when I first became a Switcher, but that was partially due to the fact that I was sick to death of dealing with Windows problems and I was sick to death of Microsoft's shady business practices." "The fact is that Apple, far from being a niche player in a race that it lost long ago, is healthier than it's been for years. The company is poised for growth, and most industry analysts agree that the overriding need to stick with the Windows platform is rapidly dissipating. The Microsoft monopoly may still be in full swing, but there's definitely a way out. So far, to the best of my knowledge, the Macintosh is the only computer platform that can fully compete head-on with the "Wintel" juggernaut, and I heartily encourage anyone living near a computer store carrying the latest Mac models (particularly an Apple Store if possible) to go there soon and, with an open mind, evaluate the latest and greatest from Apple. Who knows? You just might discover that, despite what you may have heard to the contrary, there's some real substance behind the style after all."
