Why can't I back up my Microsoft CFS2 disk 2?
Is it copy protected? If so, I'm mad as hell at Microsoft.
a. I purchased Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 WWW Pacific Theater.
It comes boxed, with two CDROMs.
I can easily back up the first CDROM but never the second
(the data disc).
b. I'm using a WindowsXP IBM A31p portable PC.
Factory installed is IBM Veritas (now Sonic) "Record Now"
version 5.1 CDROM burner software.
d. The error I get when I try to back up that disc is (sic):
"IBM Record Now
There was a problem reading the disc you are trying to copy.
Please make sure your disc is free of fingerprints, scratches,
or dust then try again."
I've burned many a backup in the year I've owned this PC & software.
Only this one disc gives me problems. The offending mscfs2 CD is
brand new, unscratched, and not dirty. I have no reason to suspect
the software, the operating system, or the hardware. I suspect the
disc. Is it copy protected? If so, I'm mad as hell at Microsoft
that they didn't mention that on the box.
I have kids who destroy CD's so I absolutely must have backups.
Only a gambler would use the original discs for any length of time.
It's inevitable they will be destroyed (in my household) within a year.
Or, am I doing something wrong. Is it just me?
Have YOU been able to back up your MS FCFS2 data disk #2?

There are freeware tools out there that can find out if and which
copy-protection a CD is using. One of these tools is "ClonyXXL" (do some
Googling for it). You can back-up protected CDs with CloneCD or Alcohol,
and the copy you create will itself be copy-protected, which I find rather
amusing :)
