Re: Any factor analysis expert here?
Raymond First, why do you need to drop or retain some variables? That is, what's your overall purpose? I can think of at least two reasons you would need to do such a thing: Creation of a scale (where 50 questions might be too many and take too long), and selection of a model for regression of some type. These two would require very different methodology. Second, (in either case) factor analysis and principal components are not methods for dropping or retaining variables. Principal components is a method of data reduction. Factor analysis is a search for combinations of variables tha...

Normalizing Image
My job is to classify raptors into their specific type using Artificial Neural Network. I have already finished processing the image and now i have the raptor's silhouette. The thing is, not all raptor faced the same direction in the image, therefore i need to find a way to normalize them so that they would be looking the same direction (consistent). I also have problem finding useful features to look into for my NN inputs. About normalizing the raptor, i thought about using a rectangle to compare every angle of the silhouette till the rectangle fill most of the image (wings of an rapt...

Matlab image acquisition...
Hi, I am building a robot with image acquisition, but I cannot figure out how to keep my webcam on all the time. I would like for the webcam to take a picture, say, every 2 seconds and save the image to a file that will then be analyzed. The way I have it setup now using getsnapshot(vid), the camera has to initialize first, take the snapshot, then save the image, and then the webcam turns off. The next time I have to take a picture, it starts from scratch. This makes the processing time increase dramatically. If there is a way to keep the camera on at all times, and just pick a specific frame...

Factor scores and SPSS 13 vs 14
Dear Group! SPSS 13 produces regression estimates of factor scores properly. However the same syntax (40 variables scores vary from 1 to 5, PAF solution, 5 faktors rotated by Promax) produces odd results when using version 14 usin the same data. Factor score correlation are negative, they all should be positive, factos scores stardard deviations exeed 1. Factor scores produced with same syntax using same data and versions 13 and 14 correlate abt .8 (and should of course correlate 1). Standard deviation i.e. the multiple correlation achieved in this regression should not exceed 1. ...

When does sampled autocorrelation = autocorrelation of sampled sequence?
Hello, It feels like this will be a standard DSP result that I should be able to dig up, but I'm not sure where to look, so here goes! If we have a continuous-time function, h(t) (assuming real and "sufficiently well-behaved" for now), then define the autocorrelation as: r(t) = int { h(tau) h(tau - t) d tau } Let's also define the discrete-time sampled sequence, h[n] = h(nT), where T is the sampling period, and the discrete-time autocorrelation: r[n] = sum { h[k] h[k-n] } My question is, what are the conditions under which r[n] = r(nT) for all n? It's trivially...

Drive Image 2002 and /ide=on switch
I found out about this switch and have used it to boost my image times to over 1 Gig/Min with low compression on my Abit KT7a with a 1.5 GHz Athlon! Astounding! I understand that it allows Drive Image to switch from PIO to UDMA mode. One thing that did happen is interesting, however. I have a 200 gig drive and a 120 gig drive as master/slave on one IDE channel. My main backup procedure is to back up from the 200 to the 120 and it works fine. Here's the problem. I have a 30 gig FAT32 partition at the end of the 200 gig drive which I use for various things and is totally ...

document.images when prefetching images
When prefetching images, why do I need the "if (document.images)" statement? if (document.images) { pic1on= new Image(300,300); pic1on.src="pic1.gif"; pic2on= new Image(); pic2on.src="pic2.gif"; picNon= new Image(); picNon.src="pic4.gif"; } So that browsers that don't support "document.images" won't blow chunks. displaying an image in a gui: error
Hey guys, please excuse the question, I've searched a lot and not come up with an answer. I am trying to put an image into a gui I'm creating, so I created axes, and then put this into the opening function: axes(handles.axes1) imagesc(imread('image.jpg')) When I run the program, it displays the image correctly, yet I keep getting this error: ??? Trajectory plotting of a series of images(image processing)
Hello Guys, I want to plot a trajectory of tennis ball thrown from one end of a table to another. This data is in the form of series of 18 images in a .mat file. This trajectory would be used to determine the final position of the ball's landing position. is there a way to overcome this problem? I shall send the .mat file if required. how to convert image to sound??
i want to know how to convert a gray scale image into sound in MATLAB such that high intensity pixel sound loud compared to low intensity one & left part of image is converted to sound only for left ear & right part of image is converted to sound only for right ear. please help me regarding this.. Hey there! Depending on which "order" you want to play your pixels in (row-by-row, like a TV image build-up for example), convert your intensity values into a linear vector. Then scale it and offset it with a sensible value: pitch=1+(Intensity(:)-mean(Intensity(:)))/(max(Intens...

cholesky factorization
Hello, I have B = eye(n,n) + A'*A where, A is an upper triangular matrix. I want to make a Cholesky factorization of B. So, one way is to make the product A'*A, then sum with eye(n,n) and then make chol(B), however if "n" is large, computing A'*A is time consuming. Is there a way to use the fact that A'*A is already in a "Cholesky factorized" form? In other words, can we compute chol(B) without having to make the actual multiplication A'*A. Remedial measures for Autocorrelation
Hi Everybody, I am working on a data set which has 1st order autocorrelation.I have detected this using DW test in SAS. I wanted to know are there any other methods for detecting autocorrelation using SAS. What should be the remedial measures employed for dealing with autocorrelated error terms again using SAS. Thanks in advance Yogi If you want to analyze your data in time-series domain, there are a couple of SAS procedures within SAS/ETS 1) proc arima, 2) proc spectra. the ar(1) process will be a special case in these two procedures. Image on-the-fly
I have a perl script that draws a graph and does other stuff with data from a database. I know the usual way to do this would be to launch a script from within an IMG tag that generates just the image. However, this is not sensible for my application as it would duplicate a load of processing - the data for the graph is extracted as the page is processed. So I generate the image, write it to a file and then call it with <IMG src='filename'>. In fact I write the html tag before I write the file. This mostly works, but sometimes with a fast connection I see a previous ve...

Canvas Images and postscript
Hi, We have an old character mode app that needs to produce PDF documents. So ... I've built a tcl program to read commands and build up pages on a canvas, and creating a pdf via the canvas postscript command and then processing the resultant postscript with ghostscript. It's all working reasonably well ... except. Images get fixed at the screen resolution. So I'm trying to find a way to get the images at a higher resolution than they are displayed, so that when the eventual PDF is printed, the images can print at a decent resolution. I'm guessing I'm goin...

Substitute distributed Factors
Hello, I am searching for an elegant way to solve the following Problem: Given a Product p = p1 * p2 * ... * pn, another Product q of the Form A*B, and some C. I want every occurence of A*B in p to be replaced by C. Example: p = X^2* f(x) * (X+2)^4 * g(x) * f(x)^2 q = (X+2)*f(x) C = a(x) Desired Output: a(x)^3 * X^2 * (X+2) * g(x) If someone has done something similar and could give me some hint it would be very nice! Updating Images
Hi, I don't have the image processing toolbox, but I'd like to be able to efficiently update an image. For example, I have a large two-dimensional array and I display the image using the image function. I want to change just one or two of elements of this array and update the image. Redrawing everything would take too much time, so is there a way to redraw those specific pixels? The way my program is set up is it updates a small part (maybe a few pixels) of a large gray-scale image (1920 x 1080) in a loop. In every loop, a very small part of the image will change. Therefore, y...

Re: Screening factors for logistic regression #3
Sigurd, Thank you very much for the useful input - and no less for following up on the old request!!! FYI - we got advice that wasn't posted on the list (from a "little birdie") not to even attempt to preselect factors based on ROC curve - just let stepwise Logistic run on a few bootstrap samples to narrow them down. The same person recommended not trying to run down all the potential correlations. However, it turns out that proc corr handled hundreds of variables just fine (and fairly swiftly, too), and we were able to reduce our candidate factors belo...
