converting .wav files (with some header text) in to ascii files

Hi ,
I have absorbance spectra data files which are in wave format. they
have a header text to about 8 lines.
After that the absorbance data at different wavelengths are
listed. I am trying to convert this file in to a matlab file so that
I can make further modifications to it. I tried using
the wavread command but it keeps giving me error saying that it is
not a wave file.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Thanks
Madhavan

Are you sure you have a .wav formatted file? .wav files should contain
time domain data. Here's a web site that describes the .wav format.

http://www.sonicspot.com/guide/wavefiles.html

Take a look at that and see if your file is actually a Windows .wav file.

If the file contains absorbance data at different wavelengths, then it
may not be a typical Windows .wav file. What program/instrument
created the file?

Hi Rick,
Thank you for your response.
This wave file was created by a HP8452A diode array
spectrophotometer. This is an old instrument.
The file extension says that it is .wav.

Looking at this example file, it is definitely not the .wav file that we
are most familiar with today. The multimedia .wav files used by Windows
are binary files, and this is an ASCII file. All is not lost however......

You can read the file with textread. Type help textread to find out how
this command works. There is a nifty option for textread that will
allow you to skip a specified number of header lines. Use that and you
can read your file with a one line command.

dblNumericData = textread(YourFileName, '%f', 'headerlines', 8)

The numeric data will be contained in the variable dblNumericData.

HTH,
Rick

Hi Rick
Finally it worked. Thank you so much.
I am attaching a copy of my mfile just in case someone
may find it useful.

Thanks again

convert mat files (struct) to ascii text files / save data as ascii text
I'm using a script that saves data (x,y) as .mat files in struct format. However I need it to save the data as ascii text files. How can this be done? I've tried save -ascii etc etc but matlab returns that the data format is not suitable to save as ascii. So is there a (simple) way to either save my data as ascii text or convert a generated .mat file to ascii text file (CSV or else)? Thanks! Converting A Unicode Text File to An ASCII Text File
We have a large number of text files built in Unicode that we need to be read by SAS. SAS does not read Unicode text. To convert the Unicode text to ASCII text we did the following: A Unicode text file adds an additional blank space to each character. To remove this blank character, you can use the code below. The hexidecimal value '00' is a blank character. So remove it using the SAS statement '00'x. The 'x' tells SAS you are reading hexidecimal. Use RECFM=N to tell SAS that you are reading a stream of data that will not conform to a typical file structure. SAS will ...
