Yes, look up ticks, tickdir, and axes in the help.

I guess I wasn't clear enough: I didn't mean on only one side a given axis (pointing in or pointing out), but rather on only the left _or_ right axis and only the bottom _or_ top axis when the plot is "boxed."  In pictures:
