Finding the normal to a binary contour image

  • Follow

Consider a binary image of the outline of a circle (black background, black interior, white boundary). If you use a standard gradient operator, the gradient is 0 at most of the pixels on the contour! What I'm looking for is how to find the gradient (i.e. normal) AT the contour. The output should be a vector image with exactly the same non-zero pixels as the input scalar image.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

David
