How to figure out amount of info needed to specify a tree shape

  • Follow

I'm a biologist with the following problem; I'm hoping someone could suggest
an approach, algorithm, or piece of software. I've got a branched structure
(a set of deer antlers to be exact). Suppose I pick a point somewhere on
this structure, remove the antlers, and ask the deer to re-grow a new set
with a bump in the same spot that I picked. The deer does it, to some degree
of precision (I'm leaving out the experimental details to make this clean).
Given a set of such before and after images, what I'd like to do is get an
estimate of the precision with which the final shape is known by the deer:
in order to grow a new branch at the spot I picked, it has to know where to
put it. Is the structure specified to within a centimeter? 10 centimeters?
Seems to me that by analyzing the images one can get an idea of how detailed
the pattern has to be specified. Any thoughts on how to analyze this? Thanks
in advance!
