Is R2007a really multithreaded? What's coming in future versions?

Saw comments saying the computation was NOT multithreaded even though
there is the option to tell it to use multiple cores and I read the
BLAS was now able to be done on multiple cores. Which is true? Can you
put multiple cores to work on a given computational task now?

I'm trying to decide whether to use meager funds to extend my license
to get updates. Does anyone know what further enhancements for multi-
core machines are in the works for R2007b and R2008a?

Thanks....
