Using GPIB in Ubuntu

  • Follow

Hello,

I'm looking to use a Keithley sourcemeter and a Lakeshore temperature controller via GPIB in Matlab. The devices are connected to PC via a National Instruments GPIB-USB-HS device and the PC is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have successfully installed and configured the linux-gpib driver. I can communicate with the instruments using the ibtest program that comes with the driver. However, if I try to look for GPIB instruments in Matlab, the search will come up blank. What do I need to do to get Matlab see the GPIB instruments?

Hi Joel,

Linux GPIB support is limited to NI and TAMs GPIB devices and drivers. We
only had 32 bit versions offically available from the vendors to link
against so support is limited to 32 bit at this time. I believe the
linux-gpib driver you mention is an interesting open source project we have
been monitoring but do not support at this time.

For the GPIB-USB-HS, we did test that device on a debian 32 bit system prior
to providing support in R2009a.

Does that mean that despite of the availability of linux gpib open source drivers we are stuck with commercial linux distributions?? or worse Windows?? or having to use two versions of Matlab
It would be nice if Matlab in Ubuntu could make use of the linux drivers for Ubuntu... I have the same problem with a GPIB-USB-HS from NI that I want to use under Matlab in Ubuntu, but it does not show up in the tmtool even after installing the open source driver.

Any future plans to make this available???
