App to put photos in order?

  • Follow

I have a folder of photos taken by different cameras on the same day.
I want to put them in order then rename them for a slide show.
I vaguely remember a program that let you move them up & down.
Oddly when !Thump is asked to order them by date the last become
first?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in anticipation

Two ways to try, assuming the file datestamps haven't been altered:

Firstly put copies altogether in one folder. Display them in date order
using the filer. They will be in date order latest first. Then:

Method 1: Copy them one at a time, starting at the bottom of the
filer window, into an archive. They will then physically be in the order
you want them in the archive file.

Present the archive file to your slideshow as if it were a directory. It
will (probably) display them in the order they appear in the archive.

Method 2: Restamp each file, starting at the bottom of the filer
window, using the filer Stamp menu item. Each restamped item will leap to
the top, so keep restamping the last item until all are done.
Users of more primitive OS versions could use a utility such as StampIt.

The files should now be in the order you require in the filer window.
Rename them individually starting aa/jpg, ab/jpg and so on (tedious!).

I will experiment with this.
I forgot to mention some have been edited in Photodesk & have lost the
original time stamp.

No tedium with http://tigger.orpheusweb.co.uk/programs/Rename.spk which
easily allows files to be re-named, say, pic_001/jpg, pic_002/jpg, etc.

Since only you know the correct order, you will need to re-stamp all the
files, as John suggested. Next time, try useing Rename before editing.

Variations does a good selective rename job very quickly... might be
worth a try.

Use !EXIFinfo to rename the images. It can extract the date/time info and
build a new filename based on that, the camera used and original
filename. i.e.,

2007-07-20T123824_DMC-FZ8_P1000392/JPG

http://www.photodesk.iconbar.com/ for the program

(Currently listed under quick links on the left)

You'll also need the format files from here:

http://mistymornings.net/info/exifinfo.html

I have a couple of apps which may help.

The simpler is !PegMerge which copies JPEGs as you drag them in: drag them
in the order you wish and they will appear renamed in the destination
directory.

It's available at www.locationworks.com/kang/peggymerge.zip

The other app (PeggyMix) is more "graphic", but relies on ChangeFSI, and
therefore doesn't work with the Iyonix: I've never been able to find a fix
to that. Email me if you would like to see it.

Sounds interesting, and I could have done with this a couple of years
ago. However, running it here (RO 5.13) seems to do nothing; no icon
bar, nothing in the Tasks listing (1). Is this line in the !Run file:

|Error this software is broken - nag kell

perhaps trying to tell us something? :-)

(1) Apart from leaving a file open, as I've just discovered!

With best wishes,

Peter.

Thought ChangeFSI worked on Iyonix?

Ha! Ghosts from the past: I used to have an office full of people using
RISC OS, using many of my own applications. However that line is REM'ed
out, it's not doing anything. (The '|' at the beginning is the same as a
REM in BASIC.)

> (1) Apart from leaving a file open, as I've just discovered!

Yeah, it was relying on the existence of a file in the choices directory,
sorry. Fixed now: www.locationworks.com/kang/peggymerge.zip

No, it doesn't. I still have a few apps which relied on ChangeFSI which I
can't use on the Iyonix.

Well, after embarassing start with PeggyMerge, I'm a wee bit reluctant.

In what way doesn't it work? Seems fine here (1.21 - 7 Feb 2003).

Maybe the app does, but not its command-line usage.

My applications use ChangeFSI to, for example, create thumbnails, so the
code might read:

SYS"Wimp_StartTask","<ChangeFSI$Dir>.ChangeFSI "+input$+" "+output$+" 28r
120:0 -lock -nomode"

That code works on a RiscPC, not on an Iyonix, it's as simple as that.

It's not just my applications, there are others. Something got broke when
they 32-bitted it.

Sorry, but I've been over the code and tested and retested but I can't
make the above happen any more.

Maybe it's a cache thing: I've uploaded a copy to
www.locationworks.com/kang/peggymerge2.zip

This is IDENTICAL to the previous, I've only changed the name of the zip
file to ensure you're getting the right file.

If that still doesn't work, I'll change the way it deals with the choices
file.

Pic_Index uses CFSI as follows, setting the command line as a variable:

        cmnd$="<ChangeFSI$Dir>.ChangeFSI "+source$+".gallery."+file$+
        " "+"<Wimp$ScrapDir>.Pic_Index.ThumbsTemp "+tail$+scale$+tailend$

which is then set as an alias before being executed by SYS"Wimp_StartTask",
and that still works fine.

I do it in that convoluted way to trap too-long paths after they've been
expanded.

If you'd like to e-mail me something that doesn't work, I'd be pleased to
look at it. As long as you're using Pluto it /should/ get through. Set an
ack just in case.

Still not working here, alas! Little error message in the top left of
the screen: End of file in "Renumber" at line 850.

RISC OS 5.13, by the way.

I might not have a chance to do more with it for a day or so, as we
have family visiting ATM.

With best wishes,

<bangs head against wall> Still can't reproduce this!
Anyway I've changed the way it saves the default choices, maybe this time
<crossed fingers>:
http://www.locationworks.com/kang/peggymerge.zip

You are deleting the original each time aren't you?

Ahaaaaah!!!!

Got it: the original, corrupt, choices file is still in place.
Silly me.

OK, the above version checks for a choices file of a different name, and
if it's not there, saves a default one.

The file <Choices>.Peggy.renumber may be deleted (in fact if you do that,
there's no need to reload the new version). The new choices file is called
"pegnumber".

Yes, as I've explained to Dr Young, I've been silly (no comments please).
The app looks to see if the choices file is there, and if it is, loads it.
However you still have the choices file from before, which is broken.

Delete <choices>.Peggy.renumber and re-run the app, it should work fine.

If not <sigh> then go to www.locationworks.com/kang/peggymerge.zip which
is a slightly different version which uses a different name for the
choices file.
