Sounds like a 3-pot 3D input device based on pantograph-
constrained movement.
While browsing Fry's recently, I came across a peculiar looking
3D input device that looked like a cross between a doorknob and
a Flight Simulator yoke, also based on pantographic geometry!
It had a working volume of about a 4" cube, and it seemed rather
hard to use for precise positioning. On the other hand, since it
presented a fixed-attitude platform for the knob, it would have
been easy to add three rotational degrees of freedom in addition
to the three translational DOF.
