atariwriter
Can anyone tell me where I can find a rom image of the original
Atariwriter cartridge? Every rom site I've found only has disk images
of Atariwriter Plus, not the original Atariwriter on cartridge.
Thanks.

Looking for an old demo w/ "House of the Rising Sun"
There was a demo for the XL that I had on disk (probably still

If I recall the flashback I just had correctly, it had a lot of
trippy GRAPHICS 9 mode effects, and I think at one point a

comverting my 5 1/2" floppies to disk images
I would like to convert all my old 5 1/2" disks to disk images that I
can use with an emulator on my Mac. I still have my old 5 1/2" Atari
disk drive, and I'm wondering if I can buy an adaptor so I can connect
it to a USB port.
Years ago, I bought such an adaptor, but it was for some kind of
archaic PC port that you could only find on really old PC's. I no
longer have access to such a PC, and I was hoping that instead of
trying to find an old PC, I could find an adaptor that goes to USB
(along with some Mac software to make the images)
Thanks,

Nordic Atari Show 2010: June 11-13
Friends!
I'm proud to announce the 2010 edition of the Nordic Atari Show (NAS)!
The event takes place June 11-13 in Falk=F6ping, Sweden (about an hour
from Gothenburg by train).
NAS is an annual get-together organized by the Swedish Atari Club
(SAK). It's a simple, improvised event; the idea is to hang out, eat
pizza, and fool around with our beloved Atari machines. The essence of
NAS is its visitors and what they choose to do with it.
Traditionally NAS is an Atari event, but other (retro) platforms are
welcome as well. However, if you're 14 years old and wish to play

Doug Neubauer on Star Raiders, Atari, POKEY, etc.
Back in 1996 I put together a little "Star Raiders" tribute
web page (which currently lives here:
http://www.sonic.net/~nbs/star-raiders/ )
Thanks to that, a kind fellow emailed me yesterday to ask
me if I knew about Doug Neubauer's website, where he has
posted some trivia about Star Raiders (did you know
"What's Wrong?" was a nod to THX-1138?), and stories about
designing POKEY, working at Atari, and other topics.
I hadn't seen it mentioned before (that I can recall),
so happily added links to his articles from my SR page,
and figured I'd share the links here, too! :)

False Error 9 in TurboBASIC XL runtime?
I have a program I'm writing and I've got the following going on:
5 DIM X(4),Y(4),XM(4),YM(4)
....
100 FOR P=0 TO 3
105 X(P)=X(P)+XM(P)
....
199 NEXT P
I've used the TBXL compiler to compile the program (generate a .CTB),
but when the TBXL runtime hits that increment statement (line 105),
it falesly throws an Error 9 (out of bounds).
I tried bumping up the array size, but that didn't help.
So I've written this klugy work-around:
105 Z=X(P):Z=Z+XM(P):X(P)=Z
Seems to avoid the issue. Annoying, though...

A while back I went thur, some of my disk library

Which allows you to play up to a point, then
provides a address where you can order the

It's a interesting text adventure with some nice

I still have some more disks to go thru,

4-player Tetris-style game idea
I just saw this:
"MULTRIS.ARC Multi Tetris is a tetris clone for the MultiJoy
interface. Use max. 4 joysticks for max. 4 players each filling up
their on column."
here:
http://www.mathyvannisselroy.nl/special stuff.htm
It occured to me, one could do a four-player Tetris-style game
on the Atari using two pairs of paddles.
Each player would 'twitch' their paddle to the left or right to
slide their piece, and push the paddle firebutton to rotate.
Perhaps push-and-hold firebutton to drop their piece to the
bottom.
Anyone feel like coding this? ;)

Integrating an Atari 800XL into an entertainment center
Hi All,
I=92m setting up a new entertainment center for my family room with all
of the standard modern fair, large LCD TV, BlueRay player, Tivo and
such. I thought it would be fun to pull out my old Atari items from

I=92m thinking of using an 800XL. I think the biggest challenge will be
cable management for the power, video and possible a disk drive

VBXE - "Video Board XE"
While reading about the resurrection of Atari chips by
Curt Vendel & friends, I discovered this, which I'm fairly sure
I had never heard of!
Video Board XE (VBXE)
Programmable, FPGA based graphics subsystem for Atari XE computers.

The project is, in fact, a few years old! (Website says "2005-2007")

Proprietary Atari chips being reconstructed
I saw some hints of this on Facebook, and just noticed this
article at the top of the front page of AtariAge
( http://www.atariage.com/ ), which also links to their
forum section, where the topic is being discussed:

"Atari Chips Reborn"
December 14, 2009
Curt Vendel of the Atari History Museum and Legacy Engineering has
been hard at work reconstructing several proprietary Atari chips,
including the GTIA (used in the Atari 8-bit computers and 5200), the
MARIA (used in the Atari 7800), and the TIA (

The legendary Atari 200
I've just learned that Atari was working on a special low-cost Atari
computer to compete with the Vic-20 and Timex-Sinclair 1000.
Codenamed "Zelda" and to be released as "The Atari 200", it was
supposed to be software-compatible with the Atari 400 at one-third
of the price. I wonder why I've never read about it here.
Apparently prototypes were sent out to software companies throughout
the southwestern US in 1980 so that they could test and modify their
products for compatibility. It had 4KB of RAM, which was more than
the Vic-20 had, but less than anything it was supposed to be
so

Online M.U.L.E. for Mac, Windows & Linux: Planet M.U.L.E.
Looks like M.U.L.E. is back!
Planet M.U.L.E. is an economic strategy game for up to four players
connected over the internet or your local network. It is based on one
of the earliest multiplayer games of all time: Dan Buntens M.U.L.E. by
Ozark Softscape.
With the blessings of the Bunten Family, we are proud to present you
the first official internet version since the game was released 26
years ago -- and it's free for anyone to play!
http://www.planetmule.com/
I've yet to try it out, but I'm really glad they made a Linux version,
since I don't own Windows or

"Tux's Turtle", a modern Delta Drawing
Check out my new pet project:
http://tuxsturtle.sourceforge.net/
It's based on the concept of "Delta Drawing", which I have (had?)
for my Atari 1200XL. It's turtle graphics, but it's even easier
to use than Logo. (It's commanded with single keypresses,
and responds immediately. [Backspace] both undoes the previous
drawing/movement operation that you see on the screen, and removes
the previous command from the program listing.)
The YouTube video I've got embedded on that page should sum
up the capabilities (hopefully). Enjoy!
