About 5 years ago, my CMD hard drive power supply died. One of the
suggested solutions was to modify an AMIGA 500 power supply. Can a
hard drive power supply be used without causing damage to itself or
the A500, when connected to an AMIGA 500? The CMD PSU output is 5
volts at 2 amps and 12 volts at 1.5 amps.

Yes, on my CMD hard drive is really an A500 power supply, and
that's the way it came from CMD.

Well, I'm unclear on your question, Paul. Do you want to take an
A500 p.s. and use it on the CMD hard drive, or do you want to take
a CMD hard drive p.s. (whether it is the modded A500 p.s. or the
lower-power CMD p.s. which you have) and put it on an A500?

Yeah, that is the lower power p.s.

What are the electric power specifications of A500 PSUs. When
I had one, the A500 PSU looked like a C128 PSU with a switch.
C128 and A500 PSUs have different electric specs as well.
My CMD PSU looks much different than the A500 PSU. I was
thinking of selling my spare CMD PSU as something that could
be used on an A500 as well. Maybe I should scrap that idea.

5 volts at 4.5 amps and 12 volts at 1 amp (without crawling
around on the floor to dig out the A500 p.s. and looking at it).

A CMD p.s. such as yours would severely underpower an
A500.

When I aquired an A500 a few years ago for $10 at a junk store, it had
no power supply. I just used a regular PC power supply and cut off
all the cables that it didn't need and added the correct connector on
it for the A500. Then I took some blue vinyl tape and coverd all of
the metal on the power supply except for the fan and a few vents so
that it wasn't just bare metal laying around. It actually turned out
rather nice and it works perfectly. I'm sure the same concept would
work for your application, although I know nothing of the CMD drives.

Yeah, at the AmiWest Show a few years ago I picked up
a converted AT power supply with leads for an A500/600/1200.
Then a year after that at the AmiWest Show, I picked up a
external BigFoot power supply, which was just really a
converted AT power supply with leads for the above computers.
Back in the mid -1990's, those BigFoot p.s.'s were going for
about $130. I got mine for just a few dollars.

No, not with those specs but you could use an AT or ATX (or even A1000 for
that matter) power supply.
