Hello all,
I recently started looking into archiving old computer magazines on a
website. One of my favorite magazines was Compute!, as well as some
of their books. But there are other magazines out there as well.
Personally I am a long-time user of the Apple II series, but I wanted
to inquire to users in these groups that have other computers as well,
to see if there was a broad interest in this. I would think there
would be a use for having some of these old publications in digital
format, online.
I own a web hosting and design company, so I have the means to do
this.
I understand there are still some existing copyrights to some of these
out-of-print publications that need to be adhered to. But I have
already started looking in to this on some.
Anyway, I'd like to hear what others have to say about this, and if
there is a demand for it. I'm willing to pursue this further if there
is a demand.
Thanks a lot for any additional comments/feedback....!

I liked Compute! but the guy who ran it at the end was some kind of shyster.
Everyone who subscribed toward the end got 3 back issues with their first
issue, so their subscription was already one third fullfilled.

There are probably copyrights to all of them. Copyrights today last a long time.

It could be a problem to track some of them down, since many of them have
gone out of business.

I liked Ahoy for the Commodore line of computers. It just last 5 years
long, and it was packed with a good wealth of 'hacking' info.

My Grandad bought every issue of Compute and Compute Gazette and had them
delivered from the US to the UK. About a year ago he threw them all out. I
nearly cried when he told me what he had done! I would love to see a web
archive of these brilliant magazines !

Much of the Commodore stuff is already being
archived. About the only journals that I have
needed but couldn't find were RUN and TRANSACTOR.
The copyrights for these may be actively enforcied by
their owners or nobody sees a need for their archives.
You may want to check out ARNOLD or QLINK to see what
already exists. My HP is terminally ill, and the public
library internet system doesn't like arnold or qlink.
Somebody else will have to provide the site address details.

*Disclaimer*: IANAL
FWIW... About two years ago I tracked down the current owners of the
RUN copyright and they did not appear to care if I scanned the mags
and put them on-line.
Of course now I don't *remember* who is the current owner. But I do
remember that I was able to make it all the way to their republication
and legal departments. While they never told me directly that I put
the magazines on-line... they didn't tell me I couldn't either. Most
of the people I spoke with had no clue. The only problem I see now is
that my research was pre DMCA so I don't know what they would say now.

Amstrad Action magazines are being archived at:
http://www.cpcoxygen.net/
Future Publishing seem fairly good at letting the old magazines be
archived in such a way....

Hello Raj,
> Of course now I don't *remember* who is the current owner. But I do
I know that CMD obtained the rights to RUN (and therefore Commodore
Magazine which RUN had obtained). Since that point, I would imagine
that the rights have either passed to Maurice or possibly either GO64!
or Centsible Software.
Centsible Software is reportedly the place to obtain back issues, and
GO64! fullfilled the remaining subscriptions for Commodore World after
CMD ceased publication.
So, I would venture to guess that the current RUN copyrights probably
rest with one of the 3 people / companies mentioned above.
You can find information about the 3 possible owners at:
http://www.cmdrkey.com
http://www.go64.de/
http://www.centsible.com/
As for my two cents worth, RUN and Commodore Magazine were my favorite
publications. Compute! and Compute's Gazzette were also right up
there at the top. I still have a large collection of these magazines
that I read and reread frequently to gleam new pieces of wisdom from
their text. It's amazing that every time I read them, I pick out new
pieces of information that I missed the last 20 or 30 times ;-)
I for one would favor a legal online source of all the articles and /
or disk issues for the above mentioned publications.
For those interested in obtaining permission, I would contact the
sources mentioned above.

Definitely people want to see this sort of stuff!
For the Apple II line, not much is really out there.
As far as I know, there is:
(1) Call Apple
available for purchase as PDF's from www.CallApple.org
(2) Nibble Magazine
available SOON from www.CallApple.org (being scanned now)
(3) Hardcore Computist / Computist Magazine
available at computist.textfiles.com
A couple good Atari sites include:

IIRC, DMCA only affects "circumvention of access control mechanisms", so it
doesn't have anything to say about things like magazines; only the normal
copyright stuff applies.

If you make a good faith effort to contact the last known address of the
publisher in order to request permission, and don't get a reply, you're
probably safe to put the material online. Even if someone else owns it
now, and notices, the most they'll be able to do is send you a Cease and
Desist letter.

Likely not even that. With no possible way to show they've been "damaged" (in a monetary sense), it wouldn't even be worth paying a
lawyer $20 to send a letter. Now, if the owner were selling, or willing to sell back issues, or CD's with scans of the back issues,
then they'd have a monetary damage argument. Not much of that going on though ;->

The Atari community is WAY ahead of us when it comes to creating
online archives of relevant materials. Check out the following:
http://www.atariarchives.org/
http://www.atarimagazines.com/
The first one includes the full text of several books published by
Compute! so I would ask them how/where they got the rights. The second site
has indexes of Compute! and Compute!'s Gazette and I remember hearing that
they intended to put the entire collections online eventually. Checking on
the progress of that endeavour might be wise.
I would very much like to see similar websites for Commodore books
and magazines and since some of the content at AtariArchives is relevant to
Commodore (like Machine Language for Beginners) I would hope they would be
willing to cooperate and share texts.

ISTM that you frequently "glean" new pices of wisdom...*not*
gleam. Gleaners were peasants who were allowed in the fields
during feudal times...they picked up the small pieces of food
that the real harvest missed.

O.K. :-) I stand corrected.
Anyway, the point being that there is so much information packed into
those magazines that you often cannot absorb it all at once. I've
reread them many times over the last 10 to 15 years, and still find
new things that I must have missed the last time.

I agree. I have a collection of old Compute!, Compute Gazette,
BYTE, Creative Computing, Computer Language, Dr. Dobb's, and
others...and often dig for articles containing certain info.
ISTM that the respective companies dropped the ball when
they failed to offer the collection on CD-ROM.
(Heck, I even have a few issues of Interface Age...)

Yes, it should be. This was a typo...using "gleam" for
"glean" seems much more likely to be misuse of the terms.
What I posted was just a "nit" that I wanted to "pick".
To me, "gleaning" implies that you go over the text
in a thorough manner and *not* even the smallest nuances
and twists of knowledge can escape you.

It's a great idea. What I'd personally like to see are complete scans
of these old magazines made into PDF-files. In that way, you can
download an entire magazine and read at your leisure, or even print it
out.

I think it would be nice to do that. I for one loved Compute have
all the Atari ST issues and disks. Too bad they did not carry the
Atari line much longer than they did.

I own the copyrights on all the articles I wrote for The Apple IIGS
Buyer's Guide, inCider, inCider/A+ and of course Shareware Solutions II.
And, quite frankly I don't want those articles out of my control or sight.
I would not authorize you to put them online.
If and when those ever do go online, it'll be on my site, and in my own
good time. But, thanks for asking.
One consideration about putting articles online that I'd never even
thought of until recently...Apparently, my articles made me "an expert" of
sorts, and I can't tell you how many attorneys have contacted me in recent
months, sniffing around, asking questions, from everything about names of
companies to info on online compression schemes....and it's a PITA. It'd
be even worse if my articles were online.

You better be charging for that...after all, as a computer expert you
should be able to get $100/hour, one hour minimum. Heck, for lawyers,
you should probably be charging more.

Just ignore copyright until someone sends you a cease and desist letter
(which no one will) then remove their shit but keep everyone else's.
This method is 100% safe.
I've seen a lot of these old computer magazines in charity shops. They
also have lots of those "Write Games on Your Micro!" books with BASIC
code for crappy text adventures. Haha.

I think thats a great idea myself... i personally would love access to those
old magazines through the internet, they were a wealth of information during
the day.

It's a good idea as I would enjoy seeing magazines put out there
again: Incider, A+, Incider/A+, Compute, even oldies like the OLD
Electronic Games magazine.
As long as copyrights are observed, I think it won't be a problem.
I always wish I didn't get rid of some of my mags a few years back,
but I really had no place for them.
I am surprised with the advent of lots of 80's nostagalia via video
games, emulators, etc, etc. that some magazine publishers haven't put
out CD's with the magazines on them. I'm sure there would be some
demand. One can hope for a complete set of Apple II or other classic
magazines on CD. :D

I know pdf is a popular format, but unless there's a pdf reader for
Apple, (or Commodore, Atari, T.I., TRS-80, etc.) I would suggest a
format our old machines can read. I just fled from a pc xt and won't
be going back; there are probably many out there who still have and
use the real thing, (even some who, unlike me, had sense enought to
stay away from the junk!) and would like to read the magazines on
there favorite computer instead of the one they "have to have for
business/internet/whatever".
I suggest GIF. It's an old format, and I know there are readers for
the CoCo 3 and C=64/128, probably also Apple.
If you have the recources, it would be nice to do both, but I know
that takes a lot of space.

Acrobat (pdf) format is convenient and makes the information
available. IMHO it is *much* better than *not* having access
to the information at all. Making the information readable on
older machines should be a separate project IMHO.

You end up with *lots* of separate files for the same issue of
a magazine. pdf at least allows combining the pages.

I'd personally be reluctant to do that without knowing about
1) tax implications of doing it, and
2) liability if I gave bad information (or even if I gave good information
but someone decided to sue me anyway)
