Copying files between 1541 and ramlink with JiffyDOS/RamLinkDOS?

  • Follow

What would the problem syntax be to copy a file from say a 1541(dev 8)
to a Ramlink(dev 16, partition 1)? I tried the standard JiffyDOS way
and it failed in a weird way. The RamLink manual briefly mentions
partition to partition, but not clearly.

Help would be appreciated.

I don't have a RamLink to test my theory, but will hazard a guess anyway. If
you first set the RamLink to the desired partition, you should be able to use
any good filecopy utility to copy from device 8 to device 16. That worked OK
with a CMD RamDrive I used to have. Just guessing it would work with a
RamLink also.

Well it sounds to me like you are having the problem of copying from
a device with NO PARTITIONS to one WITH PARTITIONS. To do this you
will have to:

A) LOAD THE RAMLINK UTILITIES DISK "RAM-TOOLS"

B) THEN SELECT "SELECT DEFAULT PARTITION" OPTION
'
C) Then SAVE DEFAULTS

D) THEN THE REBOOT THE SYSTEM

E) NOW WHEN YOU COPY TO OR FROM THE RAMLINK, THE PARTITION THAT YOU
SELECTED IS AUTOMATICALLY THE "DEFAULT" PARTITION., So you should be
able to copy to and from #8 and #16 FREELY now. ;)

  Good Luck!

I would use FCopy, FCopy+, or WCopy+ to transfer the
file from 1541 to RL partition x.

There's a way to do it with the immediate-mode commands in JiffyDOS:

@X to select the destination drive number
Load a directory from the source drive
CTRL-W to select which files to copy
Then RUN (I think??) to start the copy process.

But it's much easier to use a copier tool like those Robert listed.

It's not highlighting, it's shouting.

So essentially you are shouting some words in a sentence and quoting them to
emphasize them even more. That's how it's read in netspeak and it's not only
real poor (n)etiquette on your part, but it also displays a lack of
communication skill and poor grammer.

I NEVER "shout." ;) Don't need to. I already have a BIG MOUTH.
Heheheheh

So, with that being said, why oh WHY does everyone continue accusing
me of "shouting?"

This "AIN'T" an ENGLISH CLASS so I "AIN'T " worried about that avenue
needless to say. ;)

"ER?" You men "grammar do you not?" Grammar and English were never
my weak points. Just use "a PC version of shorthand" to communcate in
these net forums to save time and to cut back on "JABBERING."

So EXCUSE ME for breathing! Hehehehehe

  No, seriously.

The commands that can be issued to a storage device are given in the
device user's guide. There is a command for copying the contents from
a file of one name or drive number to a file possibly on another drive
or different name on the SAME device. Only dual drive devices like
the MSD-2 can be used to transfer files from one disk to another with
a device command. The RAMLink uses the old drive number parameter to
refer to partitions rather than drives..So you can issue a RAMLink
command to copy a file from one partition to another. You can't issue
a command to a device to copy files from one device (like a 1541) to
another device (like a second 1541 or a RAMLink or ...). Whether you
use JIFFYDos or some other way to issue a command to a device is
irrelevant. In order to copy a file from a source device to a target
device you need a special program designed for the purpose. Others in
this thread have named examples of these kind of programs (FCOPY, FCOPY
+. 1581 TOOLKIT, MAVERICK, ...) Terminal programs sometimes have this
utility. IIRC, JD has one of these utilities embedded in its code.
Unfortunately, I can't find my JD manual to tell you how to access the
JD device utility.

I hope I have determined what your problem is correctly.

Unless modded, 1581 Toolkit and Maverick do not work with the
RAMLink.

From the JiffyDOS manual: "JiffyDOS includes a built-in two-drive file
copier". See Leif's message, just change to the desired partition and
subdirectory first (e.g. @CP4 to switch to partition 4, @CD//SUBDIR to
switch to subdirectory SUBDIR). Can someone confirm that this works with
RAMLink as well (I've never owned one)?

The OP mentioned copying between partitions; the JiffyDOS for that would be
(to copy FILENAME from partition 1 to partition 2 on the same drive):

@C2//:FILENAME=1//:FILENAME

To copy between subdirectories across partitions (in this case, copying FIND
from partition 18, dir CMD to partition 16, dir TEMP on the same drive):

@C16//TEMP/:FIND=18//CMD/:FIND

These work on a CMD HD; I'm assuming they would work on a RAMLink as well.

Because that's how pretty much everyone interprets ALL CAPS in email
and usenet postings. Remember, it's how other people interpret what
you write that matters, not how you interpret it.

(Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netiquette and
http://www.dtcc.edu/cs/rfc1855.html for the netiquette.
Both say the same about all caps: it stands for shouting.)

Did you get this sorted out? What was the error message? Does the 1541
have JiffyDOS?

I've put up a list of CMD DOS commands on my site. These are the ones I
find myself constantly going to the manual for, or either writing down on
post-it notes :)
