d64it - I am having troubles...

  • Follow

I am trying to quickly transfer d64 images back into native formats.
Basically, I am downloading a ton of stuff off the net and extracting it
for use on the real hardware.

My process is:

1. Unzip files on the PC (faster than using unzip64 or unzip128)
2. Copy d64 images to 1581 floppy using 64COPY (to create d81), and 1581COPY
(to write to 1581 formatted disk)
3. Run d64it, specify destination as my 1541 (drive 8), source drive as the
1581 (drive 9).

When I press F8 to start the process, the screen is updated as each track is
processed, but I see nothing happening at the bottom portion of the screen
where the data window is. My 1581's red LED flickers periodically as if the
drive is doing something. The 1541 is spinning, and I hear head movement.
The whole process takes like 8 minutes, and when complete, the 1541
directory is all hosed up.

Is there some kind of compatibility issue with 1581s? I have JiffyDOS
installed on the C64 and 1541, should this be OFF?

I would prefer to just copy the d64 images to a DOS disk, use WCOPY to read
them and copy to my CMD HD, and then have d64it read/write only on the hard
drive (source subdirectory to 1541 destination partition)... anyone got a
procedure for doing this without problems?

Thanks!
-Jeff

Hello Jeff,

I believe the 64 version might have had some trouble once when I was using
1 1581 that was set as device number 11.

I would double check that the drives you are working with are configured
as devices 8 and 9.

Also, make sure that you you freshly format the 1541 disk that you will be
using before you start the process. On occassion, this will help.

If by chance you are using a 1571 drive, make sure that it is in 1541
mode.

Otherwise, I can't see any reason that you would be having trouble unless
there is something wrong with the D64 archive you are extracting.

It's been a while since I used the 64 version. I usually use the 128
version which seems to have no problems when working with devices up to
11. It may support other device numbers as well, I just haven't tried
higher numbers.

Also, I have used this program with JiffyDOS enabled, so that should not
be your problem. In addition, I have used a FD-2000, 1581, CMD HD, and
RAMLink as a source for the archive. So you shouldn't have any problem
using the 1581.

Let us know how it goes.

Is this about transferring .D64 files from a pc to an attached Commodore
disk drive throug a X cable?

Sure you can try to turn this off and see, don't you? Other than that I
see no reason why shouldn't it work. I used d64it to transfer .d64s back
and forth between the harddisk and 1541 without problems so the 1581
should be even more secure. I may verify it tomorrow though.

In any case I would check two things first:

1. Turn off JiffyDOS (although I wouldn't bet on it being the cause)
2. The reliability of the transfer from the PC. I would e.g. transfer it
two ways and checked the resulting file in an emulator.

No, I am trying to transfer from a 1581 containing a d64 image file to a
1541. I always fresh format the disk, and for sure the device #'s are
correct. I will try a different d64 image, maybe it is corrupt and this is
the problem. It's an image of Supercard V5 I downloaded of some ftp site
with Internet Explorer.

Your problem could be in step 2. Not sure I understood what you wrote, but
if you convert the .d64 to a .d81, there is no way that a .d81 will fit on a
1541 disk. Try copying the .d64 to your 1581 disk as a .d64 file, then run
d64it on that file.

(If I am wrong, you have permission to flame me!)

I don't know if d64it remembers to send "I0", so you could try to send
that to 1541 to force reread of the directory. OPEN15,8,15,"I0":CLOSE15

(With gunzip.c64 the decompression of a fairly large d64.gz from
 1581 file ->1541 disk takes 9:45. If you have c128, 1581 and 1570,
 gunzip.128 takes 6:15. http://www.cs.tut.fi/~albert/Dev/gunzip/)

I did check this. Transfer from 1581 based .d64 to the 1541 works
without any problems here. No JiffyDOS though (I use Dolphin).

One more question: You did format the 1541 disk before the transfer,
didn't you? d64it doesn't format the disk for you. You know that, right?

I would Highly recommend Getting a XE1541 cable and A program called
StarCommander.
With it you can move single programs or entire .D64 images over to any
Drive 1541,1571,1581. I've been doing this for years, and it was well worth
the 16.99 I paid for the cable, and software on E-bay.
You can also format the disks on your Ibm At warp speed instead of on
your c-64.

Uhm, unless you paid (part of) this money directly to me, no, you
haven't paid for the software. Not that this would be a problem at all
but selling the Commander for money, without permission, is not allowed.

Sorry, let me clarify:

1. 64COPY - create new d81 image, copy d64 file into the d81 image (just
copy the file)
2. 1581COPY - extract d81 image to my PC floppy drive. Now I have a 1581
formatted disk with the d64 file on it.
3. Run d64it on the C64, use the 1581 disk as the source, select the d64
file and extract to 1541 formatted disk

I didn't know Star Command supported the 1581? I do have an XE1541 cable.
The PC runs Windows 98SE. Which star utility will do this reliably?

Sounds like it should be working then, unless, as someone else suggested, the
original .d64 was corrupt.

Grab the latest SC 0.83 beta: it now has a pretty fast disk turbo for
_reading_ 1581 disks; writing in turbo mode is not possible at the moment
(sorry! <:-) ). Have fun,

Great! So I can still write to a 1581 in slow mode?
