fd-2000 or fd-4000

Hello!

How often do the FD-2000 or fd-4000 drives come up for sale? I saw that
cmdrkey lists them, but they are two months out..I don't know about
waiting that long for a drive...

To the people who have these drives, what do you think about them?

Thanks!!!

Douglas

FD-2000's? Every once in awhile. FD-4000's? Rarely.

Both are excellent drives. The FD-4000 is the most versatile,
because it can format DD, HD, and ED disks. However, the FD-4000 uses a
TEAC FD-235J mechanism. Not easy to find a replacement mech if the
FD-4000 goes down. The FD-2000, which can use DD and HD disks, uses the
common TEAC FD-235HF mechanism. In other words, no problem replacing the
mech in the FD-2000.

ED disks are rarely seen in the WINDOWS community. HD disks are
more readily available and used in the PC world. Sharing data
with C= and PC users would be just as easy with an FD2K. Since
Mr. Bernardo suggests that FD2Ks may be easier to fix, you may
want to dumb down with one of those. FD2Ks are rare but more
common than FD4Ks. I was unaware that FD4Ks are still being made.

If you anticipate storing data for your own private
use, you may want a CMD or a LT. KERNAL hard drive.
The CMDs are still being made although it was reported
that there's a waiting list for those as well.

ED disks are available from Maurice Randall and another supplier
(whose name I forget right now) in Seaside, Oregon.

True. However, by using the FD Utilities disk, a HD disk (or even
a DD disk) can be formatted as an ED disk on the FD-4000.

Well, Maurice Randall says that if you provide him the FD-235J
mechanism, he can build a FD-4000 for you.

ED disks never really made it. I guess the only true attempt in the PC
market to push the ED format was made when some IBM PS/2 were shipped from
factory with an ED enhanced disk drive, but the overall PS/2 concept was
doomed by failure from start, by poor marketing and wrong decisions at IBM,
and sadly the whole technology, quite innovative for its time, never really
had a chance.
