Greetings,
I've been looking around online and have found a couple places that
have boxes of blank 5.25"s that I can use for both my c64 and my apple
iie (don't flame me, i love 'em all ;)
The sources i've found seem just a tad pricey, though I guess when
supply goes way down that is to be expected.
Nevertheless, I wanted to pose the question to those with the real
scoop:
Where is a good place to pick up boxes of 5.25" DSDD or SSDD floppies
that I can use for C64 & apple II ? (Quant. 25-50 or so) I'm not
concerned about name brands, but would at least like a large
percentage of the box to be useable. To that end, new manufactures
would probably be preferred to old stock... correct me if i'm wrong.
A comparativel low price would be a real score as well......
Thanks a million for any and all input :)
On a side note, I'm looking for an affordable datassette unit if
anyone has one...
-Jayson

How much are they for a bunch? Say in lots of 25 or 50 or 100?
I've got quite a few that I might be willing to part with, that were bought
in bulk originally, without sleeves of unknown brand. I've used a few
without any issues...

Thanks for the replies :)
Come to think if it I guess I'd better wait until I actually have a
drive to use them in..... I was expecting "my" 1541 to be here today
at the VERY latest, but still no show. Frustrating as fuck,
considering i reciprocated 7 days ago with tracking, arrival 5 days
ago.
I digress.
Anyway, once I acquire a drive one way or another, I'll come back to
this and hit ya'll up for some disks.
I just made a set of d64's with the top 100 SIDs (as voted by lemon64
users) and want to listen to them on a real 6581.....
xm1541 cable at the ready...... opencbm ready..... gui4cbm4win
ready.....

These guys always have a reasonably priced inventory of rudimentary
Commodore accessaries. You may want to check out their disk and tape
drive stuff. Their prices for computers and disk drives aresomewhat
less reasonable. I have had great results the few times I have dealt
with them. I don't think they accepy credi cards or PAYPAL. They are
a loooow budget operation.

Wow! They have a lot of stuff at fantastic prices...... at least when
compared to what I've experienced on ebay for the past several years!
Many thanks for this link, I think I'm going to do a test buy for a
peripheral or two i've been looking for to see how it goes.....
Did you just email them or call them ?

I just EMAILED questions to them concerning details not listed
in their inventory entries and shipping & handling costs.
Their EMAIL connection is listed in the introduction on their
WEB site. My first transaction with them was the purchase of
drive head cleaning disks. They failed to list whether they
were 5.25 or 3.5 drive head clesaners. You need to nail down
precisely what you are buying. After we came to an agreement
in principle, I mailed them either a check or money order.

Yes, newly manufactured disks would be better, and would also last longer.
There is only ONE source of newly manufactured disks left anywhere in the
world. The name of the company is Athana, and they are located in the Los
Angeles, California, area. Here is a copy of a message I posted on another
forum with further information:
I'd be willing to bet that the people at floppydisk.com are buying them from
Athana and reselling them. Anyway, I have purchased disks from Athana, and
they are very good quality, and none have failed on me. Check out this page
for more info: http://www.athana.com/html/diskette.html
The $100 minimum order no longer applies. Apparently, they haven't updated
their site for a while. As for current prices, all you need to do is contact
them via e-mail or phone, and ask what the current price is on what you
want. I did ask them if they manufacture orders as they come in, or if the
disks they sell are manufactured in bulk and then sitting around for a long
time. They said that they do, in fact, manufacture orders as they come in,
so you can be sure that what you buy from them is "fresh".
Here's some information that I know that may be useful... Current as of last
November:
The name of the company is ATHANA International, Inc.
Their address is:
24045 Frampton Ave.
Harbor City, CA 90710, U.S.A.
Phone: 800-421-1591 or 310-539-7280
Fax: 310-539-6596
Website: http://www.athana.com/
The disks I found that are ideal for Commodore use are part number 47-7501,
which come in an ATHANA box, or part number 47-7501G, which come in a plain
white box. These are 5.25 Inch Diskettes DD (Double Sided, Double Density),
Unformatted, 48 TPI (Soft Sector). Minimum order is for 2 boxes; each box
contains 10 disks. Cost for 2 - 5 boxes is $7.95 each, plus freight. Cost
for 6 - 10 boxes is $7.75 each, plus freight. Bulk orders of 500 disks or
more are $0.52 per disk. Cost of freight varies, but as an example, I was
told that an order of 5 boxes shipped via UPS ground would have a freight
charge of $5.25. For any further details, you can call them or e-mail
info@athana.com.
I haven't bought any of the 3.5" DSDD disks from them yet, but I'm sure they
are just as good as the 5.25" disks they make. I'm not sure on the price
they charge for them, but like I said, all you have to do is ask them.
