Help! How to delete files from GeoPublish Master disk

  • Follow

Hello.

Today I was trying on my C64 some old GEOS software disks I bought a couple
of years ago, since I recently got a 1351 mouse. One of these programs was
GeoPublish.
I opened the program for looking at how it was made and then he asked me if
I wanted to open an existing file or creating a new one: I chose the latter
option, creating a "Test" file because I thought it would have been saved on
exit.
Instead, I noticed it was created also if I didn't save it so, in fact, it
was created as soon as I hit "RETURN" after giving the file name.
Now, if I try to delete that file from the disk (which is an original one,
not a copy) GEOS tells me that it can't delete a file from a Master disk.
So, how can I erase that file?

Thanks in advance.

First mistake... it sounds like you created the data file on your
actual geoPublish disk. Don't do that. Copy geoPublish to a different
disk and put your original away. Actually, geoPublish is so big, you
can't effectively create much in the way of a document on a single
1541 drive with both geoPublish and a data file on the same disk. Use
two 1541s or a bigger drive like a 1581, HD, RAMLink, etc.

Anyway, back to your question. To delete a file on a disk that is
designated as a MASTER disk, drag the file to the deskTop border.
Then from the border, you can pick it up and drag it to the trash
can. It kind of a safety feature on MASTER disks that the deskTop
requires.

As I said, I didn't know that files were created just after giving them
their name, I thought that some sort of saving procedure was needed. I am
quite new to GEOS and related software.

I see. I will delete the file using your piece of advice.

Many thanks!

On bigger machines like what you would run Windows on, an application
can keep the data file entirely in memory. But on a 64K machine with
the GEOS operating system loaded into memory and with a portion of
the geoPublish application loaded into memory, there isn't enough room
to store an entire data file in memory. So, geoPublish (as well as
many other GEOS applications) immediately creates a disk file to hold
the data.

In the case of geoWrite, only the current page is loaded in
memory at any one time. When you change pages, the current page is
saved to disk if any changes were made and then the page you're moving
to is loaded into memory.

This is how we are able to work with large documents on such a small
machine and be able to do a great deal of work that would normally
require a Windows machine or a MacIntosh to accomplish the same task.

What's nice about using geoPublish is you can produce excellent output
providing you use a high quality printer, preferably a laser printer
with PostScript. Hand your document to someone and they won't have a
clue it was produced on a Commodore 64.

In fact on the box there is written that GeoPublish supports the Apple
Laserwriter printer. I think it was a major feature back in 1987, when this
program was released!

Thanks for your reply, it was very interesting to read. I didn't think that
on a machine with just 64KB of memory it IS necessary to save a file as soon
as it is being created. The first computer I had was a VIC 20 but I used it
just for gaming. It was followed by an Amiga 600 but it already was a 1MB
machine...
