Hey there, I want to thank all of you for your help on buying the X1541
cable, I (https://www.protovision-online.de) who were great to deal with - i
absolutely reccomend you check out the site (although I'm sure most of you
guys visit regularly)
Anywhoo - I fired up my old 1541 drive (which worked fine about a year ago)
and it seemed to start up fine, except the motor continuously runs and the
red LED doesn't go off, so I can't really get going on my transfering. I
looked up a few documents on the web and I see that it's likely a chip
inside the drive has gone bad (I believe it did this once before way back in
1990 and I got it replaced if I recall correctly.) So that leaves me without
a working drive, I checked out the prices for some of them on EBAY, but they
seem pretty expensive and many are out of the country and thus shipping is
expensive. Does anybody in the US on here have a space 1541 drive that is
in good working condition? I can pay for the shipping of course, and
whatever extra for the drive, I just would like to get it sooner rather than
later so i can start copying my old disks.
Thanks very much, if you can please post a reply here or email me at

Rob,
I have a couple of spare 1541s, but would prefer not to ship them. If
you're in the Chicago area, you're more than welcome to pick one or two
up.

Hello Rob,
Most likely your problem is one of the 6522 chips inside the drive.
There are only two of them. One controls the communication between the
drive and the computer, the other controls communication between the
electronics in the drive and the drive mechanism.
You can verify that this is indeed the problem by swapping these two
chips. They are both socketed and easy to swap. Basically, if you swap
them, the drive mechanism should begin to function properly. Of course,
then the drive will most likely not talk to the computer properly. But
atleast this is a very easy way to verify the problem.
If this is your problem, JameCo has 6522 chips in stock.

This would likely be cheaper than buying and shipping a drive.
