SX64 LCD, did anyone ever do it?

  • Follow

Every year or so someone posts about how they are going to remove the
SX64 monitor and install an LCD display.

Has anyone succeeded yet? Just curious.

I don't think anyone has succeeded at this yet, but there is plenty of
room and LCD screens of this size can be found easily for less than
$30 .. it would be interesting to see if anyone has done this.

We should keep in mind that SX64s are relatively rare, and
highly-prized.

The people who have them may feel that they lack competence,=85 or even
confidence.

Otherwise, I too look forward to a successful project.

Been working on this one for a while myself.
The problem is, not only do you need an effective 5.6" 4:3 ration
screen, but you need one that is some what separated from it's on
screen display controls. There isn't a lot of physical tolerance for a
screen that has monitor controls around the edges, and less ability
make them accessible.

Of the few screens that were the right size, I was worried that the
monitor controls would be too hard to move or relocate on the LCD.

This also begs the question of what to do with all the added space?
There is almost enough room in back of that monitor to add an XPC
style PC to the SX.

Also... do you go with a straight composite monitor like can be found
in almost any PSONE monitor accessory, or do spend a little more and
try and find a VGA compatible unit to make the best use of the case?

Trace them on the board, solder leads and hack off the remaining
board.

Nothing and be glad it's lighter! heh Ok, make an IDE64?

I would choose s-video myself...

It is worth asking this important question: Why would anyone want to
make such a conversion? Unless the built-in CRT was broken, I can't
see any benefit. In fact, the CRT likely provides a better picture
than an LCD would. It would certainly have a higher contrast ratio,
better viewing angles, etc. But another irritating issue to keep in
mind is that the C64's resolution of 320x200 is difficult to fit to a
1:1 ratio with the pixels on LCD screens. On my PS-One LCD, I do get
a 1:1 ratio verticaly but on the horizontal they are somewhat blurred
and stretched. You can still read it, it isn't drasticly bad. But I
have a 5" CRT that I can plug in next to the PS-One LCD and it gets a
much better picture.

So.. bottom line, unless you are just desperate to save weight and
space inside the machine, or your original CRT is broken, I can't see
why anyone would do this.

I try, I managed to find a 5" TFT LCD on Ebay, and output was much
cleaner then the tube... but I either fried the panel or it was junk to
begin with... hey I got it off ebay... because it lasted like 20 minutes
then died.

I've found a number of online distributes of new 5" TFT panels that have
a really decent resolution so the SX output would look very good, but it
was also REALLY pricey... >$150.

I saw a 5" LCD in a pawn shop today that I could have picked up for $30. =
It's two hours away from here so now I wish I had as I won't get up =
there during store hours again for a while.

And the SX-64 goes from "luggable" to "hardly movable" heh.

No, the new TFT 5" LCD's are superior to the 5" CRT in the SX. I've hooked up
one to just the plain video output of the SX, and it's better. The trick is to
find one that has S-video inputs. Not easy.

www.geeks.com has a cheap 5" xbox LCD monitor, like $40 new. (iirc)

I'll convert mine eventually :)
