The User port and expansion ports are not designed to be operated with
lenghts of cable as they're not buffered, and even if they were it's
unlikely that it would ever work at those lenghts with any kind of
reliability.

URGH! The reason for this is due to the fact that my 128D is
"UNDERNEATH" the cabinet and the keyboard is on top of the desk and I
need to be able to access my cartridges and user port hardware from
directly behind the keyboard!

 THAT SUCKS! ;(

Thanks a lot! I sorta expected to hear that......

On the Expansion Port, one foot of plain old flat ribbon is usually safe as=
long as each signal line is paired with a ground wire to eliminate crossta=
lk (think IDE or SCSI cabling). Go with ground-paired signals over unshiel=
ded twisted pair cabling and you can probably stretch that to three feet un=
buffered.

At six feet you'll need the twisted pair and good FAST buffer chips at *bot=
h* ends of the cable. At these lengths, transmission and return quality ar=
e equally important, not to mention the propagation delay such a cable adds=
to any signal sent over it (around 25 nanoseconds in each direction for si=
x feet buffered).

The User Port is a bit better, as it can deal okay at least two feet of pla=
in old flat ribbon cable as long as each signal has a ground wire next to i=
t (I've never tried to go beyond that).

Without the grounds in either case, the crosstalk between adjacent lines on=
ly gets worse as the cable gets longer, regardless of any buffering.

The keyboard, on the other hand, can be extended with an ordinary parallel =
printer extension cable, as long as it is high quality and all 25 wires are=
 present.

Better to move your 128D up where you can get to the Expansion Port than to=
fool around with all this extra long cabling.

Apparently I'll also NEED a BUNCH OF 2764 EPROMS as well
unfortunately...... ;(

Doesn't the SX64 short expansion port cable already cause problems with some
devices?

That would be my recommendation too.

What is the longest cable length you have used on the IEC bus that worked
reliably, out of curiousity?

That I don't know actually. =20

In terms of total length, I've managed 15 feet before, but I've never tried=
 to exceed that.

Oh and I JUST DISCOVERED that I will also be requiring a 1541 PCB
BOARD as well. <sigh> Never ends. Hehehehe

So if anyone out there happens to have an extra BOARD ONLY lying
around please feel free to let me know and we can see if we can work a
deal out. ;)

  Thanks,

  Charles
