Ummmm, upgrade ROM?? I'll have to see what's in it, but I do know for
sure that it DON'T HAVE JIFFY DOS! I already checked it for that and
got a CBM DOS message of some sort. Which chip do you need in it so I
can check it out and let you know.

The S&H charge is $15.00 for CONTINENTAL US, so I am "assuming" that
it would be an extra $10 on top of that for "Priority Mail." This is
to ENSURE good and safe packaging so as to not damage the drive when
flying over there.

Feel free to drop me a line and let me know what else you would like
to know and I'll try to answer it to the best of my ability.

 Thanks,

 Charles

I would never consider buying anything from someone with "shifty butch" in
the e-mail addy, much less a hot mail account.
Not to mention $150 for a 1581.
Good luck with that Joe.

Charles,

The 1581 has had two ROM offical (released) versions:
http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/firmware/drives/new/1581/

It is a simple matter to open the 1581 and check the ROM marking on
the particular chip.

While you have it open, look at the WDC controller chip and note if
it's a WD1770 or WD1772. A WD1770 is preferable.

I would ***very strongly suggest*** that you consider "free shipping"
if you're asking $150. One, you're selling to a fellow comp.sys.cbm
member, not some flake on Ebay (with the associated selling fees,
collection headaches, etc). Two, what few 1581s that sell on Ebay,
that manage to go over $125, are either JiffyDOS equipped or are sold
by a known reputable Commodore collector (with manual, box, demo disk,
transit protector, etc). Three, Joe is a long-time comp.sys.cbm
associate, and he would bend over backward to do something for another
person for "cost of shipping only" or as cheaply as he could. I know,
he did for me when I was a newbie to this group. Four, there IS such a
thing as an "Instant 1581", where one only needs the floppy drive
mechanism, everything else is in the kit, and Joe can obtain that for
well under the $150 you're asking. It's from http://www.jppbm.com/ The
same website offers a 1581, refurbished, for CAN$75 (approx US$68.25)
plus shipping -- less than half the price that you're asking.

Several years ago, someone posted a short BASIC program that could be run to
query a 1581 drive and return the DOS version, controller type, and if a
jumper that needed to be added was present. It worked quite nicely with my
1581 drives. I would repost it, but unfortunately I have misplaced it.

I thought that the WD1770 is the one with problems.

I have a drive with an old WD1770 and an open J1 umper.
Occasionally, I had to suspend a lengthy session to allow the
drive to cool. Otherwise, I have had no difficulty with it.

Here is a public domain program from the 1581 TOOL KIT. It
doesn't provide the DOS version but will tell you the WD177X
and also tells if the J1 jumper is open or closed. The
program was probably written before there were two 1581 DOSs.

Mr. C64ER,

Charles Gutman (aka Ramswell) is the owner of 8-Bit Designs, and is a
very trustworthy person. Everything he sells comes with a 30-day
warranty. Try getting that from someone on eBay...

Paul, you're right.... the WD1772 is the preferred controller. I was
up way past my bedtime last night. :(

I would buy one of the kits from JPPBM and then buy an old amiga
floppy drive for about $5 and be done with it. they all have the later
rev wd controller chip, and jiffydos is only a few dollars away if you
have a burner.

No the WD1772 is the preferable upgrade rom chip. No jumpering
required. I have the ROM upgrade checker program.
I have received sereral responses thus far, but all kinds
of "conditions involved". Like overheats, requires jumper
change, et al ad infinitum! And yes the $150 price without
includeing shipping via ups is way out of line. I never deal
with EBAY on anything. So still am looking.
                      Joe

Mr. Andrew,

I'm sure Charles is an outstanding citizen and child of God.
BUT, If I have a budding business (of any kind) I would not use the word
"shifty" in my business e-mail address.

And while we are on the subject of helping our fellow man out, Mr. Charles
might I suggest you explore setting up shop with MS Officelive,
(www.officelive.com) it's geared to small business and free. I use it for
www.c64er.com (shameless plug).

Man, I feel so good now, I have helped my fellow man. Think I'll celebrate
by playing Stealth Fighter and kill a few commies!

Well nevertheless, anyone that is TRULY interested in it will get the
following:

The 1581 Drive itself, a free serial drive cable, the free original
power supply, the free 1581 toolkit original disk, and, finally the 30
GUARANTEE on workmanship and defects. All in all it seems to me that
no one else out there is doing anything even close to this in
value. :):):):):) So I think that $175.00 GUARANTEED to Hawaii is a
great offer!

Charles,
What your using is not the same as Officelive, for starters it does not have
that annoying "Myspace" look. It's for people who are serious about setting
up a professional looking webpage to attract potential customers.
Go to the link and check it out.
