HP-UX 10.20

  • Follow

Hi to everyone in this NG ...

Sorry for the silly questions...
I'm new to HP-UX ... I rescued an HP/9000 (735/99) and installed through
console HP-UX 10.20.
Now I've three little questions

1) logged as root (serial console) I can't "shutdown 0" the machine. I
need to log out to runlevel 0

2) in inetd.conf are activated ftpd and telnetd. But inetd is not started
at boot. I need to login from console, start inetd an then have telnet
access. In which file must I insert inetd in order to be activated at
boot time ?

3) I have no graphic card on the 735. Can I obtain a remote graphic
access (say with Xnest from a Linux box) ? By now, after login, no X
session is started and I don't know how to start it (if possible) without
a graphic card. In other words: it's possible to have an xserver without
local graphics ?

Thanks

Ah, I remember that box. Rather nice box indeed in its day.

Do you mean /etc/shutdown -h 0 or perhaps /etc/shutdown -h now?

I've never known HP-UX to not start inetd at boot time, but if there
is a file controlling that, I would guess one of the ones in
/etc/rc.config.d/

Hmm, I don't recall HP ever selling 735's without *some* form of graphics.

What exactly was printed on the HP-UX 10.20 install media you used?
Did it say anything about server versus workstation? If any X11 is
installed, it will, naturally, be a very old X11...

Thanks for the answering ...
Well ... may be the graphic card had been removed before I got the
machine :-(
The 10.20 CD ISO has been given me by a friend, in order to revive this
beast ;-) so no markings ...
All works ok ... ftp, telnet (after running inetd manually)

I have to configure sendmail and some other service

It seems that X11 has been installed ... but trying to configure it
through SAM fails because no graphic hardware ...

My hope was that X could use a dummy hardware sending the screen output
to a remote machine

10.20 came in both "workstation" (s700) and "server" (s800) versions,
and each of those versions would install different things.

There may be some old VUE FAQs in the comp.sys.hp.hpux FAQ -
ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/ is where I recall it being kept (if not in a
usenet archive somewhere) and if you follow your nose it should
eventually lead you to:

ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet-by-hierarchy/comp/sys/hp/hpux/

oh, I have a /125 up and running,
http://www.gsi.de/~kraemer/COLLECTION/HP9000/hp9k735.html :-)

yes but often enough the machines are ripped apart,
which is easy because they are highly modular and parts
are exchangeable with the 720.

probably.

if you mount the CD you might be able to find some file
with a table of contents telling you what version of 10.20 you have.
10.20 software comes in different flavours for the S700 workstations
and the S800 servers.

> All works ok ... ftp, telnet (after running inetd manually)

that's really strange because the startup script(s) say(s)
that inetd is automatically started at boot time.
I never had to start them manually.

SAM should work on console too,
if DISPLAY is not set and a proper terminal type is used,
eg. TERM=vt220.

Should work with a classical X-terminal.

I wasn't clear, sorry !
SAM works in console ...when I try to configure Xserver within SAM, it
says that Xserver cannot be configured due to lacking of proper
hardware :-(

Identical to mine ... except for graphic subsystem :-(

I have a "Slider" FDDI card as well as an AUI card, but my 735/99 got
recycled on my while I wasn't around to defend it :( I've asked the
Computer History Museum in Mt. View, California if they are interested
in the cards - probably won't hear from them for some time though.

Current version has that in, I think, /etc/rc.config.d/netdaemons.
0 for off at startup. 1 for on.

certainly you don't have expected an X server to run
on non-existing hardware, don't you ? ;-)
Your only option is to run the box as a client,
with an X-terminal or such as a server.

with a bit patience (once or twice a year)
you may find graphics cards (with RGB BNC outlets)
on the usual online flea market.

/etc/rc.config.d/netdaemons says:

#########################################
# inetd configuration. See inetd(1m) #
#########################################
#
# Super daemon for various Internet Services
#
# NOTE: inetd is always started as part of the boot up process.
#
# INETD_ARGS: The command line arguments to be used when
# starting inetd. ("-l" is the only option
# available at startup.)
#
export INETD_ARGS=

and "man inetd" says:

The inetd daemon is normally started by the /sbin/init.d/inetd script,
which is invoked during the boot-time initialization. Otherwise,
inetd can be started only by the superuser.

But after logging through console, I see no inetd running ... 'til I issue
# inetd &

So, anyone can tell me if there's a list of services started at boot time
in which I can add inetd ?

BTW ... the audio daemon refuses to load, signaling an error ...

Do you have a working network connection + proper configuration?

That's a nice box. very reliable and popular in its days.

I think it was "reboot -h".

You are probably confusing the server vs. client concept of X.
The server runs on the machine where you have a local display,
while the client is the programm that runs on the remote machine.

After starting inetd I can telnet and ftp correctly, to and from the
735 ... so I assume network is correctly configured ...

maybe you should inspect boot logfiles, e.g. /var/adm/rc.log.
Mine says:

Start Internet services daemon
Output from "/sbin/rc2.d/S500inetd start":
----------------------------
Internet Services started

What run level is your machine coming up to by default.

From memory you need to be at run level 2 or above to have network
running. ( at least once when telnetted in to a machine I brought it
down to run level 1 to do some work and lost the telnet session, had
to jump onto the console to finish what I was doing)

Ted.

Thank you all for the reply.
The system has been reinstalled from scracth, and it shows these strange
behaviours ...

Long boot time, wait for NIS (unexistent) server to come up ... I don't
remember having set-up one ...
Time Sync daemon fails ...
....

Sometimes, after boot complete, ip address for the network card is
lost ... I have to setup it again ... but it's a random behaviour.
The hostname, also, gets lost ...

Shuttin' down, signals error in inetd service (which hasn't been loaded)

After console login, settin' up ip address (sometimes) and starting inetd
(always) it works ...
I got all conf file and log files (through a perfectly workin' ftp
connection), now I'll analyze them ...
But the systems seems to be messy ... (??? freshly installed ...)
