I know LVM - but what is SLVM?
Folks,
My HPUX skills are about two and a half years behind the times and it
will hurt (and likely) cost me some. I do have an old F30 running HP-UX
10.20 so I'm sure that is going to prove some help.
I'm looking at jobs in the UK and notice one contract that requires LVM
and "SLVM".
Thus - My question - What is SLVM? Has SLVM got something to do with
Storage Area Networks? I'm just guessing but pointers would be much
appreciated - especially if there is a big or small learning curve for
someone to pickup 'SLVM' if they have reasonably strong LVM skills....
Thanks in advance,
randell d.

I guess it is just a typo in the contract description. I never heard of SLVM
and this did not keep me from managing 25 HP9000 systems running 11 and 11i
the last 2 years. Beside LVM hpux now also comes with VXVM from Veritas as a
bonus. However, mirroring and online file system increase still requires an
extra license.

Did the contract also happen to mention ServiceGuard and clusters? At
some point I seem to recall SLVM being "Shared LVM" in the context of
SG clusters.

where do you want to be today?
these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway... :)

SLVM is the LVM technology necessary for the Oracle Parallel Server on HPUX
10.20 and 11.X
You configure oracle with RAW logical volumes that can accessed on 2 or more
systems. A Superset of the MC/ServiceGuard software called MC/Lockmanager
or MC/ServiceGuard OPS Edition handles write access to the logical volumes.
You can think of it as MC/ServiceGuard ++ specific to paralle instances of
oracle across multiple nodes.
I hope this helps
