Interrupt Boot Process on HP 382 Workstation running HP-UX 9.10

  • Follow

Hello Everyone,

I recently inherited a HP 382 workstation and need to
change the root password. In the 700/800 series systems
I am able to interrupt the boot process, start the IPL,
and change the password. However, I do not know how to
interrupt the boot process on a 382 workstation. I have
tried to use every key combination imagineable
(ESC, CTRL-BREAK, SHIFT-CTRL-BREAK, etc.) but still no
success. Does anyone remember how to interrupt the boot
process of a 382 workstation (running HP-UX 9.10) to change
the root password?

Thanks!,
Denise

See this article (the newest of my similar articles):

If that does not work due to Google's !@#$%^&*()_+ broken "Google
Groups BETA" search facility, then try:

i.e. on an 'old' 'local' Google site, in this case the Canadian ".ca"
site.

Hello Everyone,

To interrupt the boot process on a 382 workstation use the following
procedure:

1. Force the O/S to run a file system check by hitting the power button
on the workstation.
2. Power the system on and wait for the following message to appear:
" File system not properly shutdown. Beginning file system Repair."
3. Immediately enter [SHIFT]-[CNTRL]-[pipe]. You will get a root
prompt.
4. Edit the /etc/passwd file using vi. # vi /etc/passwd
Remove the first field of the root entry. e.g.
root::0:3::/:/bin/ksh
6. Reboot system. e.g. # reboot

Well, technically:

a) the steps after 3 have nothing to do with interrupting the boot
b) you remove the 2nd field in /etc/passwd (the 1st is the user name)
c) what happened to step 5?

a) Yes, you are right. Step # 3 has nothing to do with stopping the
boot process,
but it will give you a root prompt which is needed to change the
root password.
b) Yes, it is the 2nd field as shown in the example. This is what
happens when
your reply to email quickly.
c) Typo

Thanks for the correction.
:)
